It really sounds like you need to forbid everything outside.  d-b-f and drag that box over everything that's farther away than you want your dwarves to go.

The alert will not activate automatically.  Whenever you know there's danger, you need to m-a and select that alert.

ok that helped a tone...so i forbid everything but my dwarves are still wandering in that direction to "go get something"...wtf are they doing?! im so confused!!!

Are they still wandering out into forbidden territory?  If a dwarf is confined to a burrow, but still attempting a job outside of that burrow, you'll get tons of cancellation spam and running back and forth.  If they're still trying to run outside, did you make sure to forbid everything?  Did you cover every z-level of the ground outside?

It's really funny watching them do unnecessary surgery because of a wrong diagnosis.
the conditions were bad enough to turn a dwarf who didn't care about anything mad, that's pretty hardcore.

Thanks, that sounds great! Now, provided this hack also cleans blood from dwarfs, does anyone know where I could find it? I haven't had any luck with Google search and DF Wiki...

So, I have a dwarf in the military that can use miscellaneous objects, and I was wondering if there was any way to equip him with a table or something of the sort.  :D

Is it a drawbridge, or a retractable bridge? In order to build a retractable bridge, I had to build it in open space with land adjacent, but not on the land.

What does the build say when you highlight it with the q cursor?

marble STONE is a flux-grade stone and is not a common stone thus it's generally forbidden to use in most circumstances involving stone aside from making pig irons. Check your z-stone and see if it is red. The second issue is that building construction is a low priority for busy dwarf. 'q' the bridge for its status and see which of them is not working. Then check your 'u'nit screen, see what they are doing and do something about it.

Hello all,

I just picked up DF yesterday, watched and read the beggining of the tutorials, and more or less figured the rest on my own.
I managed to land on a perfect spot, underground water, lots of shrubs and wood, a lot of flux stone, no enemies.
Everything goes more or less fine, I dig, set up a carpenter and mason workshop, get all excited about my first chair and table wohoo.
And then it starts getting annoying (or fun): I'm running out of food, but I am completely unable to produce any.
I have a lot of underground seeds; but I need to mud-up some tiles to do that; and I therefore need a floodgate to control it; meaning I have to develop a mechanism.
Or I could gather shrubs to get seeds to farm on the surface.
Problem is, I didn't spend any points in either mechanics nor herborist.
My dwarves refuse to build the mechanics workshop because of "mechanics required, and none of them want to start gathering; although they are equipped with either axes, pics, or nothing. Even when they have nothing to do (all of them are on idle, occasionally going to rest or eat)

I searched frantically in the wiki and tutorials on a way to train my dwarves; but it seems to hint like I assumed; that unskilled dwarves are very ineficient, but still capable of carrying any tasks.
Is this a bug? Or did I miss the "academy workshop"? I'd really like to be able to train my dwarves from scratch.

its a retractable bridge...and yes 1 end of the bridge is on land...when i hover over it with q it says "needs architecture"

oh and...my mason that i gave architecture to is idling (i made sure that thats the only job he culd do) sooooo the low priority thing shouldnt be an issue

This is intentional. You can, if you want, take a dwarf who has been mining his entire life and never set foot aboveground and for absolutely no reason other than because you feel like it, tell him to go pick berries on the surface. He'll suck at it at first, and it'll usually take him several bushes to get even a single usable plant, but he'll be able to do it. As he continues doing it his Herbalist skill will gradually increase, and he'll become better at it, getting more plants in less time.

To get your dwarves to build a mechanics workshop, turn off all labors on one of them, turn on the mechanics labor, and designate where you want the workshop built. If you've already set a workshop to be built, cancel that order and set it again.

I keep getting cavern collapses in the caves. There's almost no walkable tile down there now. What's causing this? My dwarves are rarely anywhere near the collapse, thankfully.
