I'm not sure about the military part, but with your alert screen open in the military menu go down to "Active/Training" or some other alert, press enter when you're over it and then press right arrow 2 times, then press enter over whatever burrow the dining hall is designated as. Every civilian dwarf will drop what they are doing and scramble to the dining hall if they can.

need help with burrows!

basicaly...what i want to do is as soon as i get an alert, i want my military to rush to the entrance of the fortress and i want everyone else to cram into the dinning hall (so i can lock it).  How do i go about doing that?

Make two burrows, one at each location.  Make an alert in the military screen.  Set the dining hall burrow as active for that alert.  Make an order from the military schedule screen to defend the burrow at the entrance, and edit schedule for the alert you made to set every squad on that order.

When you hit enter on this alert, civilians should run to the dining hall.  Then you can press right and activate each squad into this alert, and they will run to defend the entrance burrow.

Then just be sure when it's over to revert your military squads to inactive or active/training or whatever you have it on by default, or they'll get really pissed off standing there at the entrance forever.

ok so im trying to restrict all my cittizens to a small area around and inside my fortress in order to keep themsafe from all the wildlife however my military seems to be above this mandate and runs around collecting old bolts and gettingthemselves killed...how do i make them stop ignoring the burrows order but still keep them on active/training?

It's really funny watching them do unnecessary surgery because of a wrong diagnosis.
the conditions were bad enough to turn a dwarf who didn't care about anything mad, that's pretty hardcore.

ummm... double-check that you have modified the military schedule for that alert with the order "Defend Burrow".  I don't have the game handy right now, but I think you tab through the different alerts, and 'o' to create/edit orders.  Place that order on every month for every squad for this alert.

If that's already done, maybe retrieving stuff supercedes military duty, and you just need to forbid things you don't want them going after.

So you want them to train while stationed at the entrance?... I'm not sure about that one.  As far as I know, they'll only train at a barracks, as marked by a weapon rack, armor stand, or bed.  I think most people place their barracks close to the entrance so that whenever there's a threat, the military just needs to step outside the room.  Setting that up and saving burrows for response to an immediate threat is your best bet, I think, since you can't order them to both defend burrow and train at the same time.

Personally, I make sure to have my barracks somewhere in between the entrance and the rest of the fort.  I designate all of my fortress past the barracks as a burrow and make an alert labeled 'Get Inside' just for civilians.  When something nasty shows up, I active that alert and then use 's' and 'm' to move my squads where I want them.

no no no! i want them to stay within the fort (and a small area outside) while training...this includes the barracks (which are right next to the entrance) but they keep wandering off :s

also...im having trouble with the uniform making process...why does it keep saying "metal armour"?  ive told them to wear breatplates, greaves, shields, high boots, weapons, gauntlets and helms but it just keep saying metal such and such in addition to the other armour.  also...why cant i do a "assign uniform to whole squad" thing like the wiki says?

My dwarves keep spamming a cancellation message for cleaning themselves. I have a cistern designated as a water source, with a well in the area. Nada.

When the squad is scheduled to train, they will train wherever the barracks are set up.  When they're off-duty, they will act as civilians, staying within whatever burrows civilians are restricted to.

Uniforms have some quirks.  Just press enter on the 'metal armor/headgear/legwear/etc' to remove those, if that's what you were asking.  I can't answer the assign uniform to squad question without access to the game.

yea but the problem is that my guys are "preparing" to go sparring and "collecitng equipment" which is getting them killed because theyre leaving the safety of the burrows :s

i followed your advice and created a CIV allert within a designated area in case of invasion...will it active automitacly when enemies get near or do i have to trigger it?

what im trying to do with the military burrows is to have them stay in the fortress and spar rather than running off collecting things and getting massacred

It really sounds like you need to forbid everything outside.  d-b-f and drag that box over everything that's farther away than you want your dwarves to go.

The alert will not activate automatically.  Whenever you know there's danger, you need to m-a and select that alert.

Hello.

I've gotten a few game years into my first serious playthrough, and have found that the lowered FPS is slowly but surely making my fortress unplayable. After doing so browsing and conducting a couple of tests, I suspect that the blood my dwarfs have carrying around is to blame. I've tried washing it off, but that's a temporary solution. A few hours later, everything becomes very sluggish again.

What I am wondering is this: Is there a way to simply delete blood splatters altogether from the game?

yes theres a "cleanmap" hack that allows you to delet all blood from the map.  however, as more blood is shed you will have to run this hack again
