In the past year, a goblin ambush killed some dwarf merchants. This past autumn, the dwarf caravan didn't come. Is this permanent? If they don't ever come back does that mean I'll never get a baron/baroness?

I'm a dorf! D:
I dunno all this, .exe/complexwhiztalk.rar
EDIT: Nvm, I think I got it. Yay! I feel smarter now :3
EDIT EDIT!: I has another problem
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
Sorry for the large ass picture >.<

Is it small when playing in fortress/adventure mode, or just at the starting/embark screen?

On the start menu/video.  I havn't got past that yet.  On .12, they both got big when I did fullscreen.
I'm not sure how to change the start menu, but when you actually get to playing, it should change to fullscreen just fine on its own.

It will, but it will still be rather small, if the problem is what I think it is. Near the end of one of the releases, .16 I think, Toady explained that the art has been foobar'd. An explanation of what I'm about to tell you is there.

1.) Download one of the older versions of DF at least before .16 but maybe earlier. The version you changed from should do nicely (you can skip this step if you've still got the files kicking around.)

2.) data/art is the place you should be looking. What you'll notice is that one of the curses_800x600 is much thinner than the others. Copy that one into your current version of DF's art folder, overwriting the other one.

3.) Make sure that that is the Font selected in your ini file

4.) Enjoy properly sized DF

The caravan should come every year, regardless of how many were killed in the past.  It'll be a smaller caravan since they took a big loss the last time, you might have to give them a pretty good profit to get their confidence in your fortress back up.

Check your [c]ivilizations screen. Your dwarf nation might have gone extinct.

My dwarf went into a Strange Mood lately, and is asking for Shining Bars of Metal
What exactly is that?

Exactly what he says:  he needs bars of metal.  He probably does not need a specific type of metal, just any metal bar.  You can buy metal bars from the trade caravan, or get it by smelting any metal ore at a furnace.

I have iron bars on excess, but I guess he already took one. Hm. Gonna have to dig deeper to make some different ones >.<

If you have Iron Bars plenty, and he already took one, then it is likely that he is stuck on some other requirement for the strange mood.  Dwarves in a strange mood list all the ingredients they need, not just the ones they haven't got yet.  What else is he demanding?

Two questions:

1: Noble mandate for raw adamantine items. Can this be fufilled by extracting strands.

2: Since updating from .08 to .16, I have issues with using the mouse to designate mining areas. This is both for old fort saves and a couple new tests. Mouse clicking actually designating anything seems to be spotty at best and only work on the top half of the screen. Any ideas?

1- When you mine admantine it comes out as a stone. You extract strands from the stone and turn the strands into admantine bars. When they ask for raw admantine, they mean the rock. Mine some admantine, then make a piece of furniture out of it or something with a mason's workshop.

2- If you havn't already, turn the custom DF cursor off. If you don't use it, try shutting down other applications that might be taking up your processing power. Or you can just use the arrow keys to designate.

I didn't know that. In .16 I had a dwarf go into a mood, and he got one ingredient and had to wait for the other one, but it only showed the last thing he needed, and not both. So yeah. He wanted a stone block and some leather. Redirect yourself to the "Face Palm" thread if you wish to know what happened there after >.<

As Sphalerite already pointed out they should arrive anyway.   Loosing your outpost liason can be more of a problem..  I've waited upto a decade to get a new one before (.12 i think).  Not sure how exactly this works in .18

My dwarf in a secretive mood wants stacked cloth and stacked cloth (and some other stuff). He already picked up some cave spider cloth, but he refuses to get the fiber cloth. Any ideas why? I can't afford to lose this guy.

Has that been observed to happen before? How long do I have before he goes insane?
