What is the knife user skill?
One of my military dwarves in legendairy'+5 in it.
But he's using an Ax not a Large Knife.
Should I try and obtain a large knife for him?
How did he get trained in it ? He is in a sqad with a guy who is high master at it, and who is uising a large iron knife but he has no ranks in student...
It's not uncommon for dwarves to have high ranks in odd weapons when they show up.

How do I use artifacts as furniture?

Zack, my boy, practicality - or the lack of it - has never stopped a Dwarf Fortress player before. You want to find a way to play this game without your eyes? Someone here with the know-how will be able to help you and we'll be damned if we let a little thing like the practicality of a solution get in our way.

How do I use artifacts as furniture?

'b'uild them as usual. you'll find them in the relative furniture item (beds, statues, tables) under it's own name.

to know artifacts names, 'l'ist them

You could change the creature to live only in a biome that the target race lives, maybe?

1. Clothing my dwarves have "lost" is lying around in my fortress. Via order I set to reclaim all the stuff, but it does not count for stuff before I set the order. So, how do I get my dwarves to pick up clothing from dead dwarves? They dont touch it, nor dump it.
you're looking for a Cabinet
it must be 'b'uild into a room assigned to a dwarf, who will then store his clothes inside.
for more information about 'Container'

edit: nvm, it seems I missed the 'dead'-part; no other way but to burn those damn socks with magma, I'd say

Remember my dwarf who lost his hand?  Several years have passed, and he suddenly started spewing blood all over a part of my fortress.  I checked him though and he doesn't have any new wounds.  Do untreated lost limbs spew blood from time to time or something?

Hopefully that's all it is, and hope that he's not infected with some long-term disease from some fb he's fought, or your whole fortress may be doomed.

I haven't even broken into the caverns yet, so no worries there.

However, speaking of caverns, I've got a magma pipe extending all the way up into the first cavern and with a couple of levels of empty air above it, at around 12 levels below ground level.  Is that kind of thing normal?  I've never seen it before.  I'm not far from a volcano, if that has anything to do with it.

(I play with Stonesense and it has a thing that shows you hidden tiles, so that's how I know it's there.)

Yeah its fairly common to have a magma pipe extend partway to the surface.  Not sure which version this arrived in.

Having it run all the way to the first is a bonus, i usually find these 'failed' volcanos down by #3.

My turn:

How much water is needed to form ice?  will 1/7 form a full block like 7/7?
How much magma do I have to drop water on to form an obsidian tile?  same deal...1/7 work?

Hi there, I have 2 little questions. Answers or pointers in the right direction are welcome:

1. Clothing my dwarves have "lost" is lying around in my fortress. Via order I set to reclaim all the stuff, but it does not count for stuff before I set the order. So, how do I get my dwarves to pick up clothing from dead dwarves? They dont touch it, nor dump it.

The clothing is forbidden, which is signified by the {brackets} outside the name when you "k" over the tile. To reclaim (unforbid) individual items, you can use the "c" key in the k menu. There is also a mass-designation tool in the designate menu.

Sorry, but no. The clothing is not forbidden. It is just the (imported) stuff from a dwarf who died. I can not dump it either - no one is touching that damn stuff. Also there is clothing laying around from other dead dwarfs and lots of clothing from children. It seems that everything a dwarf drops, regardless the reason (death, madness, unhappyness), is forever damned and can not be picked up by anyone.

According to your earlier post, the behavior changed with the order menu upon future deaths. Forbidding is the only possible way for that to happen.

Is there a utility that heals dwarves? I just embarked and spent a lot of time digging out a near perfect landscape. Then my monitor got unplugged. Once I plugged it in; I was greeted by my expedition leader, unconscious and surrounded by gargoyles :(.

will adding water to a murky pool by designating a corner of it as a pond stop it from collecting rain anymore?

I added water to the murky pool I had tapped for a water source to keep the rest from evaporating after taking too much from it at once and it has never caught a drop of rain again in ten years while just next to it a murky pool is working just fine.
