As far as I can tell, dwarves will always use a well to gather water, no matter what kind of water is under the well.  This will result in buckets filled with 'water laced with salt'. which dwarves will drink when they have to.  Screw pumps can be used to desalinate water, sometimes ... there are some strange circumstances to exactly when this works that I'm still trying to figure out.  You should worry more about the ocean flooding your fortress.  Study how water pressure works in DF.

The worst that would happen is the raging ocean will flood into my fortress and drown us all right? :P
I might just try to channel stuff off of the river since I think they have less pressure...

How do I make my dwarfs stay inside?

w->burrows.

Make a burrow that's just the inside, etc.

then exit that, m->military.

a-> alerts

make an alert called INSIDE.

now scroll down to it, go riightways to the burrow column, and hit enter on your burrow you made.

Now, if you want everyone to go inside, hit enter on that alert, and it'll say [CIV] after it, meaning that all the civilians are doing that.

I'm still mining out my fortress, how can I make them stay inside and still mine without me constantly extending the burrow every time they mine 1 tile?

I think the burrow extends to even unmined tiles.
I use them to keep my miners mining in the right area sometimes, and I've never had a problem.

Close off all exits to the outside and turn off the alert.  Use drawbridges, temporary walls, or whatever.  So far all my forts have had just one entrance/exit with a drawbridge.  When there's danger, I activate the alert to make everyone run inside, raise the drawbridge, then turn off the alert and there are no problems.

And burrows have never extended to unmined areas when I've used them.

some people have managed to channel the ocean somehow i think, probably higher z-level channeling n stuff - my experience is this though: ocean_pressure = ꝏ; in other words, expect fun of the third kind ;)

Shad in the waterworks
« Reply #5302 on: November 20, 2010, 10:06:13 pm »

So I built a little covered hut for my fishermen. I made it big enough to dig a channel for my main water inlet as well. Now the main pressurized portion of the water inlet is inhabited by a very large school of shad. Perhaps being near an active fisherman when I channeled down sucked them in. I don't really know how vermin fish work. I want to dig out an aquarium and deposit the shad therein. Is this possible? Are the shad really there, being vermin fish, and will they get sucked into and stay in an aquarium? I could make the aquarium (made with glass windows) permanently connected to the brook, would vermin fish spawn in it?

Vermin fish will spawn in any water within a biome they inhabit, so you don't need to drain water that already has them.

The fish you see swimming around are unrelated to what your fisherman will produce.  As bizarre as it seems, fisherdwarves do not catch the vermin fish you can observe swimming around the map.  Instead, the fishing job magically produces raw fish items out of thin air.  The type of fish, and the number of fish that can be caught, are determined by the location of the fisherdwarf when he is fishing.  It is not related to where the water he is fishing next to came from.

Vermin creatures, such as your shad, teleport around randomly.  If you make an aquarium, they might teleport into it, then teleport out randomly sometime later.

Unless something's changed in .17/.18, water loses pressure when it travels diagonally.  Dig your ocean channel like this and you shouldn't have flooding issues.

No ideas why my obsidian digging isn't working?

Fishing underground was impossible the last time I checked (even though vermin fish appear in the water).

Also, I've heard that edged weapons are excellent at killing unarmored people, while blunt weapons are preferred against armored ones. Is this correct?
Yes this is correct.  Vs something unarmored, bladed weapons will easily chop off limbs and heads and such.  Vs armored targets, you either need to penetrate the armor, or hit somewhere unprotected to do damage with an edged weapon; whereas blunt weapons still do damage as long as they hit, regardless of where they hit.

If I connect a floor grate to a lever, will it make the floor grate "solid" like a floor and the only way to fix it is to open it up, or will it still function as a grate? Also, do bars let water through when hooked up to a lever (if they can be) or do they function as floors?

Basically, is there any way I can let liquids through a tile, yet it still function as a floor, but when I want to, close off the liquid part so the waterfall at my entrance will become a drowning trap?
Put a floor hatch or floodgate one level below the grate.  Attach the lever to the hatch/floodgate, flooding will only take slightly longer, and you can still walk over it/have a waterfall when not flooded.

And a floor or wall so it'll flood? Ok, that makes sense.

I'm having issues with a strange mood.
He wants "Skeletons" "Stacked Cloth" "Glass", in that order.
He's taken bones, but won't take any glass, nor any cloth.  I have all 5 types of cloth, and all 3 types of glass.
