Will dwarves clean paved roads if they're indoors? Or just regular/smoothed rock floors?

I believe I have seen them clean indoor roads, but cleaning is pretty buggy anyway. It might be faster to deconstruct and reconstruct the road.

New fort, first trade caravan, I've been focused on fort-building, making defenses, and getting my steel industry going. Nothing much to trade, though, and I don't want to get rid of my cut gems, they are for encrusting. Okay, we can foist off the low quality obsidian swords, and hey what's this? A fox cage? I caught a fox? Okay, sell that sucker!

"Urist McJustabouteverybody interrupted by fox."

No selling untamed animals?

I think I just figured out a way to let a bunch of things loose at once, hehe. Stockpile all the wildlife you want slaughtered near your militia and when the next trade caravan comes, move all the cages to the depot. Play "Yakkity Sax" during the ensuing chaos, as civilians run screaming from the terrifying deer, bolts fly in every direction, and wrestlers bite the heads off of raccoons.

Very easy way to trade with caravans: create spiked balls for traps, even copper average quality unit costs around 1000, steel masterwork can worth even 10000 IIRC, build few in few seconds, and sell the happy hippies/dwarves/humans for half of their caravan, and no 9000 crafts left and right anymore :D

Yeah, sure, for the second year. But this first year my smelters and forge are focused entirely on steel armor and weapon production, getting my first squad equipped and I don't really need to trade for anything, since the fort is already self sufficient. Plus, I think early high value exports make a fort grow too quickly and attract too much attention, but I may be imagining things. The RNG in this game can play tricks on the mind.

First year trading should be many small value items to train your broker, IMHO. And normally, that would be cheap stone crafts for meat, but with all that obsidian laying around, rock swords sounded too tempting and you don't get multiples of those, so fewer things to trade. Thus, the fox cage and ensuing hilarity. I did queue up Yakkity Sax, because I had to form up a militia on the spot, and watch them chase it around until they cornered it and wrestled it to death. All the while, dwarfs canceling jobs left and right, "Eeek! It are A FOX!"

I've got a secretive mood dwarf who won't gather materials... he wants "stacked leather", "shining bars of metal", "square blocks", "rough gems", and "cut gems".

I've got leather, stone blocks, metal bars, and a wide variety of gems both cut and rough. Why won't he gather anything?

Guys, i want DF to announce me when some dwarf get skill level-up, like in ol' good 40d. Any way to do this?
Repeating, also, i embarked on untamed wilds, in search of fun with giant leopards and eagles, but all i got is foxes and deers jumping around. Also2 is there any way to ensure there will be goblins? First, i look at the legends, sites, i see many dark towers with goblins, this mean that they aren't extinct, second, i look at "goblins------" string at civs, but last fort hadn't any goblins for 7 years, meeting all that requirements. No fun  ::)

He may want a specific kind.

Are whips still really, really powerful? As in slicing off limbs and armor with ease and all that? Working on my mod and going about adding in new weapons and not sure if I should 'improve' the existing whip when I recall them already being crazy strong.

That did it. He likes zinc, and as soon as I made some zinc bars he started gathering stuff. Thanks!

If a snatcher snatches a child .. and the child grows up to become a dwarf while in the bag...

What happens?

This is correct.  When you select a cage with any unfriendly creature in it to trade, the dwarves will bring the cage and release the creature.  Hilarity ensues, especially if you had a bronze colossus or something in the cage.  This is an old bug, been around for years.

If I'm reading the wiki right, if you have salt water in a cistern and it is connected to well, the well will somehow make the salt water a drinkable source of water without needing to use screw pumps? I'm wondering if I can just poke a hole in the wall, let some ocean in and hope I haven't VASTLY underestimated the pressure of the ocean.

As far as I can tell, dwarves will always use a well to gather water, no matter what kind of water is under the well.  This will result in buckets filled with 'water laced with salt'. which dwarves will drink when they have to.  Screw pumps can be used to desalinate water, sometimes ... there are some strange circumstances to exactly when this works that I'm still trying to figure out.  You should worry more about the ocean flooding your fortress.  Study how water pressure works in DF.
