How do I go about making a channelled hole in the ground, several tiles wide by several tiles in height, fill with water via rain?

You cannot, only murky pools fill with rainwater.

There is only one tile that can gather rain currently, and that is the muddy pool tile. However, the rain collects on the muddy pool tile, then functions like water in general, and will eventually fill the space it surrounds it.

I generally dig out, underground, the area around a muddy pool in order to make a surface cistern that then leads to a larger cistern at the bottom of the map. The muddy pool is closed with a bridge, so that the outside temperature doesn't evaporate the collected liquids.

Which then lead to a series of feeder aqueducts low in the map, to take advantage Well quality that comes from deep wells.

So, I've been trying to cast obsidian along the edge of the magma sea in order to mine out the visible gems and such which are on tiles touching magma.  Every time I dump water onto the magma tiles, it does nothing.  Thoughts?

Because this is happening;
1) Water meets magma and makes an obsidian wall
2) Obsidian wall goes "lol I'm not attached to anything (SMRock doesn't count)
3) Obsidian falls onto the SMR and is annihilated
4) Executer scratches his head in confusion
5) Return to step 1.

Why is it not considered "attached" to the tile next to it (not SMRock tile)

L D O
L L  D O
L D O

Where L is the lava, D is an ore, or a gem tile, and O is some unknown type of tile.
I dump water on the underlined magma tile.

When I said "edge" I didn't mean the bottom.

You mean The Lazy Newb Pack?

Currently it includes DF .16, and the most current version of DF is .18. A most excellent pack though, I'm still using it. :)

Ah, yes! Thank you. I hope he updates it for .18 soonish :)

Better, simply because artifacts are about masterwork quality.

well, crossbows are close to useless in melee. Additionally steel is light already, so if you want crossbows that are best suited for ranged and melee (amongst other crossbows of course) make masterwork silver. Heavy and accurate.

Adventure mode 31.18.

In addition to the fun night creature business, is it possible to just locate a random underground cave entrance and explore for a bit, killing creatures that are found there?
How can you locate such an area on the map?

TIA

Fox in box? The fox got loose!
« Reply #5279 on: November 20, 2010, 01:46:16 pm »

New fort, first trade caravan, I've been focused on fort-building, making defenses, and getting my steel industry going. Nothing much to trade, though, and I don't want to get rid of my cut gems, they are for encrusting. Okay, we can foist off the low quality obsidian swords, and hey what's this? A fox cage? I caught a fox? Okay, sell that sucker!

"Urist McJustabouteverybody interrupted by fox."

No selling untamed animals?

I think I just figured out a way to let a bunch of things loose at once, hehe. Stockpile all the wildlife you want slaughtered near your militia and when the next trade caravan comes, move all the cages to the depot. Play "Yakkity Sax" during the ensuing chaos, as civilians run screaming from the terrifying deer, bolts fly in every direction, and wrestlers bite the heads off of raccoons.
