Higher skill in Pump Operator theoretically lets them pump longer before becoming exhausted.  At least it did in 40d, I'm not sure how it works in the current version.

It's difficult to test when pump speed seems to be limited only by the uptake source. Also hard to compare between a skilled operator and a dabbler when they both work as well and as long as the job requires. But it least it should improve a stat, right?

what makes dwarfs drop hats, shoes, socks, gloves, when assigned to a militia squad?

Can you make them keep these things on?

The uniforms for the militias, when it shows "over clothing", means they should not drop their existing stuff, yes?

e.g. I have uniform "swordsman" defined, has armour, greaves, gauntlets, helm, boots, and it has "over clothing" showing. That should mean they wear their gear over their civilian gloves + socks, yes?

I think it has to do with some things not being able to be worn over/under other things.

So, my adventurer JUST finished getting a full set of armor, but unfortunately lost the use of his left leg. Long story short,
How does one put items in a bag you pick up? (and will this stay permanent if you drop it in a village?)

How can I find magma, what are you "tactics" for finding it? I cant seem to even find magma, may someone tell me please?

Dig a downwards staircase.  Dig a 1 square up/down staircase one z-level below it.  Repeat step two until you hit warm stone.  Upon hitting warm stone, do it once more.  voila, the magma sea.  If you happen to hit a cavern during steps 1-3, then move your staircase to go through a pillar in the cavern.

And if you hit semi-molten rock, you have managed to miss the magma sea. At this point, you can start casting about randomly a level or two higher than that for it.

Did you issue that squad any ammo? (Also, remove the ammo assignment for hunters)

Well -- given the fact that the REST of the squad showed up and didn't have to point their fingers and shout 'Bang! Bang!', I'm guessing that yeah, I did assign some ammo to them. The crocodile surely thought so, as he bled out from a couple-hundred minor wounds...

My guess is, the thief was a stealthed kobold that nobody saw and thus couldn't be ID'd.

ETA: I just fought off a siege and wound up with a caged Voracious Cave Crawler. It is listed as a "caged prisoner" rather than a "caged wild animal". Am I to presume this would preclude taming it for the fort's benefit?

There used to be a complete package with Dwarf Fortress for Windows, Ironhand's Tileset, Dwarf Therapist matching the DF version and some other software. It was linked somewhere in the forum here. I can't find it anymore. Does it still exist and where?

  Sorry if asked previously, 350 pages is a lot to go over.

One way is to have a smaller work room off your main work room, which contains a jeweler's shop and a craftsdwarf's shop (cause you might as well decorate with bone while you're at it. Bring the supplies you want to encrust, and the gems into the room through garbage dumbs zones, etc. Then, get your encruster in their, forbid-passage on the door, then give him his order. The only thing he can reach is what you gave him to encrust, so he uses that.

Voila.
