The C means you have a combat report.
There are also sparring reports and hunting reports.
Go to the [r]eports screen to check them.

Where do flails fall on the scale of "Whips are tiny, super-sonic hammers"?
What do you mean by switch control?
As for equipping them, other than possibly grabbing a weapon/clothing by pulling it from an enemy and bashinf people with it, they will never equip anything. This makes markman much less useful than in fortress mode, because they never get more arrows.

I've heard that retiring in a village will get you new/better armor when you start again, but I don't know if this works with companions.

I beg your pardon? Did you perhaps quote the wrong post? Your answer doesn't make any sense to my question.

What am I supposed to do with "Zotir Shashngalįk Eddaz's green glass" ? Can it be used somehow?

Btw it means Zotir the Hellish Abbys of midnights. Died after being bisected by an untrained dwarf's bare right hand.

Oh, sorry.
Yeah, I was answering the question about equipping companions.

Green Glass FB? Titan? I assume that's his corpse, in which case you can't do anything with it until it's butchered, then you can roast him in the kitchen!

How do I butcher it? When selecting "Butcher an animal" the jobs get cancelled, to available corpses.

Another question: is it just me or does the game ignore the population cap in latest version?

The remains of inorganic forgotten beasts (salt, glass, mud, vomit, whatever) are completely useless.

A flail is a type of mace, so I assume not.

When a dwarf is cleaned by water, whatever washed off lands on the floor beneath him. What about dwarves who are cleaned by the mist or soap?

EDIT: Yes it does.

How do dwarves get effected by secretions?

Only in Dwarf Fortress would you try to catch a mermaid to butcher her and make trophies out of her bones
