Yes. As soon as you enter town, everyone will die. Except perhaps some children ("You look like a mighty warrior." "I'm 103 years old!")

If you gen a world for 500 years, then play a fort for 100 years, when you go to Adventure mode will all the shorter lived races all die instantly once they get loaded into memory?

Please upload your fort.

Is it small when playing in fortress/adventure mode, or just at the starting/embark screen?

On the start menu/video.  I havn't got past that yet.  On .12, they both got big when I did fullscreen.
I'm not sure how to change the start menu, but when you actually get to playing, it should change to fullscreen just fine on its own.

It will, but it will still be rather small, if the problem is what I think it is. Near the end of one of the releases, .16 I think, Toady explained that the art has been foobar'd. An explanation of what I'm about to tell you is there.

1.) Download one of the older versions of DF at least before .16 but maybe earlier. The version you changed from should do nicely (you can skip this step if you've still got the files kicking around.)

2.) data/art is the place you should be looking. What you'll notice is that one of the curses_800x600 is much thinner than the others. Copy that one into your current version of DF's art folder, overwriting the other one.

3.) Make sure that that is the Font selected in your ini file

4.) Enjoy properly sized DF

Does this have anything to do with menus not taking up the full screen?  Everything else scales properly, but menus and lists always stay the same size in the upper left corner.  This applies to any menu in the game, not just the start menu.  I've always just assumed this is the way it is, but if there's some way to make them expand to full screen that would be amazing.  Browsing unit lists and stocks would be so much easier!

Maybe people should love for the sake of loving, and not with all of these optimization conditions.

It very well could be; give it a go, worst that happens is you lose 10 minutes of your life.

What happens to me is that everything is ridiculously tiny; the start menu and embark screens are small and jammed in the upper left, and in gameplay the entire screen is filled but everything is very small. I could see a hell of a lot, but details and actual reading hurt my eyes. The above fix corrects that.

Is there a way to make a squad particularly focus on one combat skill? Specifically, biting?

I dunno, but I just saw a wrestler bite a kobold's head off. More specifically, he bit the kobold on the head, then shook him. His body flew off, leaving the kobold's head in the dwarf's mouth. So, biting, yeah. Pretty cool.

That's exactly why I want my squad to train on biting. Having an axe swung at you by a dwarf is scary, but a dwarf tackling you and tearing chunks out of ya with his teeth is fucking terrifying.

Another question: I just noticed that on my newest embark, magma forges and magma smelters and such are available, but I don't see any magma. If there's a magma river somewhere underground, what's the easiest way to find it?

Not sure if it is a spoiler, but unless you've changed any world gen settings, each embark is guaranteed to have a LOT of magma if you dig far enough. A magma sea as it were.

How do I switch control from my adventurer to his companions? And, how would I go about equipping them?

Where do flails fall on the scale of "Whips are tiny, super-sonic hammers"?
