I think I made a mistake when constructing my magmaforges.
Well I've only dug out the area but I think it might be a Z-level to high. Can magmaforges work with 1 empty Z-level then magma?
Z.Lv.
1.## <- forges
2.__  <- empty level(Channeled)
3.~~ <- magma.

Or do I have to pump up the magma to get it to work?

so i am confined to 31.16 or starting over(?)......well, if thats the case :(...then several days of my life i have lost playing this game very recently are telling me its not worth it. i dont think i could go through the mental trauma, maybe ill come back in a year or so.
Howabout you have 2 versions. Keep 31.16 and your old save, and then in a different folder play 31.17.

All megabeasts avoid traps, not sure about the fortifications or semi-megabeasts.

Semi-Megabeasts can usually get trapped. Ettins, giants, and cyclopses (cyclopes?) do.

Also, do all megabeasts avoid traps, and do all semi-megabeasts not avoid traps?
Megabeasts and semi-megabeasts do not avoid traps;  you can catch a dragon, hydra, or giant in a trap.  Forgotten beasts and titans do avoid traps.

Sorry, you need magma on the level directly below.

If i place fortifications for a roof, can my marksdwarves shoot at whatevers above them?

I don't know about fortifications, but Grates work. (though you can't make a  large roof of them)

Suddenly I've got dwarves storing food in the coffers in my barracks where the active militia do their thing. There are plenty of food piles elsewhere. There are plenty of goddam barrels. But for some reason, the goddam dorfs are filling their coffers with food, which promptly rots and turns into hideous miasma. This is not cheering up "The Stockades Of Honesty" as they stand around in their barracks catching up on dodging and fighting and so forth.

Who is responsible? How do I stop them?

Currently, I'm replacing the coffers with cabinets. No idea if that will help. But if I can work out which dorf is the hoarder, I'm gonna put the bastard to work trying to pump the river dry...

Do you have miners or wood cutters assigned to carry food while on duty?
I've heard of this problem from many people,

was just about to modify my post. I had just found that site, was going to confirm that in adventure mode, silver cutting weapons were in fact worse than copper.

Depends on your purpose. For bladed weapons and armor, steel is better than bronze is better than iron is better than copper. For bludgeoning weapons and ammunition, silver is most ideal, followed by iron and copper, I think (though I hit silver pretty quick.

For furniture, just see what each dwarf likes best. My mayor likes tin, so I stuck some tin statues in her bedroom.

A question about caverns:

Somehow i have the impression that each subsequent cavern layer is more dangerous than the last, by depth.  Is this true?

If it is true, and i generate a world with only 1 cavern layer, will the danger in the layer be the same as the first layer would have been if there were 3? or will it consolidate the danger that would have been spread over the 3?

Thanks for any help
