I've just discovered the fun in Adventure mode!
I am confused about the layering and permits of using armor.
http://df.magmawiki.com/index.php/Armor <- I've read some here, but I get confused.
So if anyone is willing to help me out please do :)

Is there any penalty for wearing to much armor? More than the speed loss?

In an unrelated question, how does one equip armor?

-edit
On an elven alt, in case they can't wear leather.
[W] (or [w], it's been a while since I played), but be aware that elves can only wear elf sized clothes.
As an elf, clothes that you can wear will just have the name of the clothes. As another race, elven clothes will have "narrow" preceding their name.

Cloth/leather clothes-->Chainmail/leather armor-->Plate
Having too much weight will lower your speed, but unless you carry around dragons in your backpack you should be fine.

So I can have like 1 Cloth, 1 Leather, 1 Chainmail, 1 Plate - on the same slot? :)

Try it, you have nothing to lose but your time and sanity.
And nobody here has any sanity, anyway.

Nice! How about dual-wield? and I got my halberd in just one hand, and a shield in the other, benefits?
Maybe I try to break down the game in to metagaming, or not. I just like to know what the penalties are.

And is there a better way to equip weapons than, droping all you have equiped and then pick up the weapons you want to equip?

I'm not sure about previous versions, but I heard a conversation about dual wielding to take advantage of the new combat system.
I don't know of a better way of switching weapons, sorry.

Dunno about dual-wielding traditionally two-handed weapons, but I went to town on a pack of wolves with a large knife and a flail, and it was pretty brutal. There is certainly a main-hand/off-hand system, as my mace was used 65% of the time, hands/feet/biting was about 25% and my offhand was 10%. My favorite damn thing to do is take my off-hand and throw it at a straggler. I got one hell of a neck impale when I threw my knife, fresh from an eye gouge, at a straggling wolf, and then I really messed up another wolf with a twirling battle axe I had stached in my backpack. I really approve of the new combat system.

Thanks for the protips on armor! (I assume the prefix 'Large' means I can't wear it)

-edit
OIOIoi, got ambushed by a cougar in the night, after 3 steps he came out of the darkness 2 steps away.
The spinning bronze battle axe strikes The Cougar in the upper body, tearing apart the muscle and tearing apart the right lung!
The Cougar is having trouble breathing!
The bronze battle axe has lodged firmly in the wound!
After that I walked over and put my flail through his head.
godDAMN I love throwing crap.

Well I got a halberd and an axe, but I only seemed to attack with the right hand. Maybe its more for aimed attacks.
On thing tho is that I can wield a 2hand weapons (Halberd) and a shield. But once I lose grip of the halberd and pick it up again, I need to go through the process of dropping the shield then pick up the halberd.

Maybe I should stick to one hand weapons ;p

Hmm, my quarry, a 59-kill giant, is somewhere in what appears to be a vast underground cavern. I really, really, don't want to get lost, and I've already slain 2 giants and don't know how many more I'll survive without sustaining serious damage. Is there a way to locate the giant without trudging through this entire complex?
Also, is it possible to retrieve arrows?

On the world map, look for towns with yellow bars, those indicate shops. Shops on the town map are represented by a small sign outside of their door.

Edit: If you're using a tileset, I'm not sure what do, but I'd suggest you look for a town, remember the symbol for it, then go and find another town that is represented by two symbols - the one you remembered, and a different one. Then zoom in to the different one.

I use the Genesis mod, which uses Ironhand tileset.
But I'll look for it :)
Thanks.

If you aren't using version 31.17, the shops are bugged.

Will a 7-deep lake eventually dry up if:

a) it has no inlet or other source of replenishment
AND
b) a floor is built over it

? or do you have to reduce its level to 1/2 before lack of input will eventually turn it into mud?

Only 1/7 water will dry up in a non-scorching environment.
And then, only if it is above ground.
That said, your lake will still be "above ground" even if you floor over it.
