If I've told workshops to only use dyed cloth in the options, will they literally ONLY use dyed cloth, or will they use dyed cloth until they run out of it, and then start using normal cloth?

The elaborate explanation for the 40d version of the game is still valid:

1st 2 migrations are hard-coded to happen, you get them even if you don't have a parent civ to send them, if you don't want them you should kill them, or at least let them die.

So I'm melting a bunch of useless goblin crap and I set all the copper mail shirts to be melted through the stocks menu.  Will the dwarves actively take them from the live goblins in the cages to the smelters or do I have to dump the shirts first?

You'll have to dump them first. (Don't forget to unforbid them too! but I'm sure you knew that.)

Awesome!  That's exactly what I want.  I want my live goblins well and armored.

Is there a way to change the default room size (the one you get when you first create a room from a bad let's say) to the maximum possible, as confined by the doors?

I try to make fairly large but linear bedrooms for everyone and it's a bit annoying to resize every one.

I don't think so. Hint: build your beds in the middle.

Does somebody know of a good fortress 3d visualizer that works on Linux?

Almost certainly not.

Put them in the nearest-to-best armor you have, but keep the really good stuff for the melee meatshields.
