How good should my Military be before I send them into the first cavern, which still lacks any forgotten beasts to my knowledge. All I SEE in there at the moment is a tribe of about 10 swallowmen.

its okay if they have low/no skills as long as they are properly equipped wearing full armor.  cave tribes only have wooden weapons, which won't hurt you through armor, but sometimes their blowgunners have poison.

What are the skill differances between a War trained animal and an untrained one? I just want to know before I moddify any animals to be trainible or not.

War animals can be assigned. That's nice for escorting any outdoor/cavern goers.

Can I actually create a cistern that fills up with rain water? I was digging one as an experiment in one of my fortresses, and it was raining, but I wasn't seeing any water filling it...

Also, if I'm collecting rainwater, do I need to have constructed floors in my cistern to keep the water fresh? And If so, can I build constructed floor under an open floodgate?

Only a murky pool can collect rainwater.  So you'd need to have a murky pool that you've emptied out, let it get filled up, then re-empty it.

How can I start a breeding program for captured giant desert scorpions? Do I have to mod the RAWs for this? If so, what do I need to add?

Edit: And now I have a sudden desire to "breed" (Mod-in) a new pet. The Miniature Giant Desert Scorpion.

You'd have to change the GDS' [PET_EXOTIC] tag to [PET]. Or you'd need to get a dungeon master, but they're broken for now.

Are not those scorpions building destroyers?
Might want to watch out for that.

They have buildingdestroyer:1 which means they can only destroy wooden things

Well the reason I ask, is because they don't have a [Child] descriptor, like all the other breedable animals. Is that not a requirement, or... what?

Oh. You would need to add:
   [CHILD:1]
[GENERAL_CHILD_NAME:giant desert scorpion hatchling:giant desert scorpion hatchlings]
[CHILDNAME:giant desert scorpion hatchling:giant desert scorpion hatchlings]

I didn't realize they didn't have those.

What's the use of assigning hunting animals to hunters? I've assigned a hunting jaguar and 2 dogs to one guy and while they follow him around they don't seem to attack. Do they only come into play versus other predators that fight back (I've only hunted horses/groundhogs)

As far as I know, hunting animals are stealthed when not attacking, so they don't scare away whatever the hunter is hunting.

Thanks, I'll try that on the new embark I've got going.

Out of morbid curiosity, is there a way to drain a murky pool by digging up from below it? (yes, I'm aware that that could potentially be Fun for the dwarf doing the digging)
