I created a pillbox for my archers. It's nice and blue. It's two levels tall and has a roof. I want to lock the stairway on the roof. Do I need floor bars or some other construction?

This is a feature, not a bug, correct?
You're playing Dwarf Fortress.  There isn't much of a distinction.

A hatch can be placed on top. You can press 'q' and forbid passage to lock the stairway.

On the z screen for stones, are these listed from least valuable to most valuable (IE, magnetite being the most expensive iron ore, calcite most expensive flux, slade most expensive stone)

Is there a way to designate a food stockpile to always stay full, or at least take precedence over lesser needed food stockpiles? IE, I want a food stockpile in my archers tower to always stay full of food and booze for the archers stationed there, or at least for them to be replaced when empty before my main food stockpile.

What is aluminum for? And is bismuth bronze stronger and/or more expensive than iron and steel?

Aluminum is just a metal ore. Use it to build furniture or something.

It is better than iron, but not better than steel.

No. They're arranged according to their order in the raws. Also, all iron ores have the same value [8], all flux stones have the same value [2], and slade has a value multiplier of 1.

So my dwarves could care less if their table is made out of alunite or microcline, but they would appreciate a marble or gold one?

They appreciate legendary dining rooms. Gold or marble tables are more valuable than microcline or alunite, so it helps make the dining room better. Wouldn't YOU like eating from a gold or marble table?

You can see their quality if you expand the menu when  making the trap.

Wow, I never noticed that option at all. Thanks!

Would smoothing/engraving the dining room floor make my dwarfs happier than paving the floor with marble? I personally would love to eat in a marble dining room with gold furniture (the walls are 70% marble 30% microline/malachite, the floors are 50-50 marble/alunite)

Oh how I wish I had used stonesense :/

Build roads, then deconstruct them. They'll turn the floor to normal marble. Then smooth and engrave away.

Building regular floors and walls work for this too.

About to start a new .14 game.

Should I pick "The Crested Anvil" or "The Crypt of Fountains" as my civ? :D

I've seen that bridges normally form walls when retracted, but mine don't.

They just dissapear when retracted. How do I make them retract into walls?

When you build a bridge, the menu lists keys to change the direction the bridge lifts in.
Change it to not retract.

I choose whichever one has more settlements; it seems to increase the selection of goods (stones at least) available when you embark..
