Great reply, thanks.

New question:
There are fish in my indoor reservoir, but I can't seem to set a fishing zone on the zlevel above the water. Is it possible to fish indoors?

Screenshots of the reservior and where you're trying to set the fishing zone would be very helpful.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

You can see the pool itself, the floor above with the ground channeled out, and the readout when looking at the zone  properties.

There are plenty of floor tiles though. In the second screenshot you can see the blue ~ on the floor below, and the gray ~ for black sand floor.

Odd... How exactly did you fill that? If it's not connected directly to a natural water source I'm pretty sure you won't be able to fish from it.

Does weapon quality do anything for crossbows? And are metal crossbows any different than wooden ones? Some immigrant with levels as a bowyer got a secretive mood so I was wondering.
I think higher-quality xbows make your dwarf effectively more skilled with the weapon.

Fish can be fished in any water. And I'm pretty sure he filled it from above, judging by the waterfall at the top of the screen and the microcline center pillar with water in it.

There are no fish in the biome in which the pond is located, whatever that biome may be.  This is totally a function of where the pond is located, and is unrelated to whatever source of water you may have gotten the water from.

If you dump a dwarf corpse into magma before it rots, is there any unhappiness created?

\/ Thanks.  Makes sense really.

Yes, this generates the same thought as if the corpse rotted away.  At least, it did in 40d.  I haven't tried this in the current version yet.  The same applies if you atomsmash the corpse or otherwise destroy it through any means other than letting it be put in a coffin.

It's impossible to atomsmash a coffin with a dwarf inside. Bridges can't be build over coffins and coffins are emptied when deconstructed.

You could destroy a coffin by dropping a cave-in on it, or making it out of non magma safe materials and then flooding the area with magma.  I don't know if this has the same unhappiness effect as just destroying the corpse.

Alright so, I've been having trouble embarking only being able to have done it once since I've started this new 0.31.13.
I heard somewhere it had a bug where beings weren't abandoning their settlements but leaving them so their farms were lagging up the country side.

Whats the next best previous version I can play that'll actually let me play?
I really want to explore all the dwarf fortress 2010 goodies.

I don't think I can go back to a version that won't let me milk animals and that doesn't have actual cave systems.
