I have 1 legendary weaponsmith and 1 legendary armorsmith. How do I make sure that when I ask them to make armor, that they are the ones who make it, besides by turning off everyone else's armor/weapon smithing skills as that is a pain in the ass?

'q' over the workshop and then press 'P' t open the workshop profile, you can set specific dwarves to that workshop or specific skill levels. eg. minimum legendary, maximum legendary.
That way only the dwarves you assign or an available dwarf with the chosen skill levels will work at that workshop.

There is no such option over the magma forge.

Well, I don't mean to sound sarcastic, but doesn't it say right in the {q} menu "Manager needed to set preferences" or something of that sort?

Anyway, go to your nobles screen and appoint a manager so you can use the basic {P} feature.

I captured about a hundred goblin enemies. Is it possible to place these cages strategically and use them to attack a forgotten beast? Just how strong are forgotten beasts?

You can build the cages, link them to a lever, and pull the lever when a FB is nearby to release them all. Forgotten Beasts are random, so it's hard to gauge difficulty, but if it has deadly blood, sealing off the area and letting the goblins kill it would be the best option because it would let you see the effects of the syndrome without getting the blood all over your fort.

I just downloaded the lazynewbpack 0.31.12, and my dwarfs won't make charcoal, they REFUSE to make charcoal, won't even touch the furnace.

Why are you using the old version? 0.31.13 just came out.

The lazynewbpack has all the tools and tilesets in one simple package.

Is my problem common with 0.31.12?

You can get the .13 phoebus version. The whole thing. I did and it's working for me. I don't know if it's common, but it makes no sense for you to use an older version and complain of bugs.

Do they have the wood burning labor enabled?

Is it a wood furnace that you're using?

Right building
Right labor (furnace operating is a different one)

Can I make my mayor a soldier? He has some good statistics. Is it a good idea?

Now my mayor is the mayor and the militia commander. Will this cause any bugs?

That's almost always the problem with dwarves ignoring the wood furnace.

What does the symbol that looks like an uncut gem in the new phoebus 31.13 mean when it stands next to a weapon? It's like a bigger "masterful" symbol.

I'm currently playing in a freezing biome and I absolutely need to grow some aboveground crops. Is this at all possible?

I suppose you could mine out the top of an area by channeling down and then building a floor over it (a ceiling) to keep snow from falling onto it.

Why aren't my troops following uniform requirements? I assigned full steel armor. Some troops are still missing at least 2 articles of armor, like a steel gauntlet (they only have 1). Why? I checked the stockpile and there is a left and right gauntlet available there. This was not a problem when I assigned armor and weapons individually, but doing that for more than 1 dwarf is a pain in the ass.

Can I set the options to pause the game and give me a warning when a dwarf is close to death due to thirst, hunger etc? I accidentally trapped a statue hauling dwarf behind a statue and didn't notice until he died.

Check the health screen frequently (available with hospital). You can see if dwarfs are extremely thirsty or hungry which usually indicates that something goes wrong.
