You have to build the cage somewhere: b-j
After that you can access it through the q command and unassign the caged animal.

I have four cages, only one is occupied. I can't access any cage via "q".

before you can q it you have to b j it(wink wink). hit b(for build) then j(for cage) then move the cursor where ya want it, then enter. Then attach a lever to it. then pull the lever.

A-ha! Oh, I'm sorry for being so thick guys, I'd done this procedure for other objects too I don't know why I hadn't thought of it. The whole "build" command was putting me off since I'm not actually building anything. ^^;
My mule is now finally free after weeks of confinement, I hope he gets along with my butcher.

If you're just gonna slaughter the critter(cats,dogs,mules,etc) you don't need to attach a lever but you do still need to build the cage.

The only time you ever need to attach a lever to a built cage to free something is if you have to free it from range (skeletal creatures, other deadly beasts).  Otherwise, it's completely unnecessary.  As Laurin said, build the cage (b j, use x to expand the list for a specific cage), then [q]uery the cage, [a]ssign, and deselect the creature inside the cage.  A dwarf will come along and free it.  No levers needed.

Just repeating my question, since it didn't get answered. But is there a way to make multiple selection during the trade screen? I've been making loads of crafts and am getting tired of individually selecting each item to trade.

I haven't really tried a Gobbo Tower Embark yet, but some ideas...

If you can't designate it for removal as constructions (d-n), & can't mine it as cast (d-d), try caving it in (dig under it, build a Support, channel out around, trigger deconstruction of the support, watch floors cave-in on each other & deconstruct).

If none of those work, then I would assume you just have to move in.

You can't make multiple selections, except.. if you have the bins to spare, you can fill them with crafts, haul them to the depot and then mark each bin for trade, which will mark all of its contents as well. Just remember that wooden bins will piss off elves.

Give cats natural metallic armor and throw them in your danger room.  Also allow their mouth and tail to grasp (shield in mouth, weapon in tail xD)  Have a cat based military.  You know, do the same with all tame animals xD send in the cats as shock troops to disrupt the archers

It's only in certain sinister forests, the undead ones don't have it, the savage ones with orges and harpies do, it spawns randomly on the surface.

Does rain solidify lava?
No, unless the rain hits a dry pond bottom, where it becomes water then runs into the lava.

Alright, thanks.

And one final question, is there any way to designate a specific item for trade, outside of the trading goods menu?

I have a couple of artifacts I want to trade but they're not in the trading goods menu, and any attempt to trade the box they're in ends with the dwarves carrying the artifacts away and then taking the crate to the depot.
