I have a tame, uncaged dog with a name and the preference "This animal is waiting to be trained"
Here's your problem.  If they dog has a name, it's probably someone's pet.  Dogs which are already a pet of some dwarf can't be trained further.  You can only train stray tame dogs.

I want to get rid of some of the little critters, can I just go to the objects folder, and delete them from their file?

Deleting the raws of any creature will effectively remove them from the game completley. However I think if you do that without genning a new world there will be glitches.

You could remove their brains, so they just die.

I tried it out when I realized I had another region I could copy/paste the data from if it didn't work. It had a load error when I started the file, saying it couldn't find the creatures I removed.

I think I'll try removing their brains now though, that sounds good.

Not entirely sure that this post should go here, but I'm going to ask anyway.

How does one extract the seed from a world? I'd like to regen a specific world so I can get the mud in the caverns back, among other things, and I don't know how to get the seed to generate it with.

Abandon your current fort and go into legends mode. There will be an option to export map and gen info.

Okay, I've found that, and the hotkey for it is p, yet pressing p does, as far as I can see, nothing.

Is it supposed to seem like that? Is there something I need to do now?

EDIT: How in the hell I managed to miss the files being added to the main directory is beyond me.

Thanks anyway.

Abandon your current fort and go into legends mode. There will be an option to export map and gen info.

Simpler: hit ESC while in fortress mode, pick "Export local image" then choose "e". This will save off a pic of the fort and the world-gen data to your main DF directory.

Ok, I have a problem. I have a guy resting in the hospital with many fractures that need setting in casts, but my chief medical dwarf just takes an empty bucket to the well and sits there, for months on end, until he starts dying of thirst and then runs off to drink and sleep. When he wakes up, he comes back and does the same thing again. Meanwhile my resting marksdwarf is not getting tended to.
The well is fine, there is heaps of water in the reservoir, and none of it is blocked or broken. The well is also a meeting room, would that be a problem? He's applied casts without a worry before, though.

Where he is, only 2 z-levels. I have 2 wells on the same column, that's not a problem is it? Nobody was using the other one.

And there's water under it?

Yes, there is plentiful water beneath it, as I said.
Now a whole load of injured soldiers came in from mopping up a siege and nobody's getting diagnosed because the medical dwarf is still standing next to the well, clutching his bucket.

Nevermind, he's doing it now. Weird. Also, for some reason there have appeared Troll Clothiers and Troll Brokers outside my gates...not even a message about them. Where did they come from?

Probably leftovers from a siege or ambush.

Hey guys, does number of caged animals have an effect on FPS?
cause I've got something like 10 pages of animals, but they're all caged
I'm going on a mass slaughetering spree, converting all  10 of my craftsdwarves into my butcheries...
will this help my FPS at all, or am I just wasting my time?
I've already dammed my river, drained my moats, and put graphical FPS to 5, but I still can't get anything over 10-12 FPS
any tips?
