hmm that means I have less booze then I originally though...
and I'm out of wood for barrels
is there any advantage to using gold for barrels?
only cause I have something like 200 bars of it
I'm making statues to litter around my fortress for now, in an attempt to boost morale...

Also does the overall skill of the squad have any effect on the individuals learning pace?
Like, if I have a squad with a novice Axedwarf and a Legendary+5 axelord, will the novice learn faster under the axelords tutelage then having, say an expert axe dwarf teach them?
assuming all other variables like student, teacher and personality are the same, ofc

I just noticed on one of my dwarves Kill lists
"Snang StealCarried the Diminished Virgin the human"
I lol'd

In 40d Metal Barrels were 1/10th as likely to be penetrated by vermin as wood, but I don't know how much wooden barrels improved the protection from vermin.

However, Try to avoid using gold, as the weight of the Barrel effects how quickly it can be moved. I'd recommend using Gold for Furniture & Statutary(sp), preferably in the dorms & dining areas, since that should make your dorfs happier.

But with only 200 bars you probably want to hang on to it case you later get a Noble who likes to demand stuff be made out of it.

Yes.

You can also deconstruct your embark wagon into 3 logs, which you can then use to build a Carpenters Workshop at which you turn the remaining 2 into Training Axes, giving you 2 free training axes (if you want to do it that way).

Purple colours indicate that your dwarf is on duty in the military.

I hope it's not super slow because it seems like a good way to use them.

Ottocot, I do not believe the material from which axes are made affects the rate at which trees are felled, only the Woodcutting skill of your loggers.

OTOH, if they get attacked by the wildlife & try to defend themselves with Training Axes they're pretty much mulch.

1 more question that is not that related to Dwarf Fortress. Where could I find a list of all the things that can be on a dwarves profile (description) page? I know it exists because I stumbled upon it once but I have no clue where.

When you forge a new boot or glove or gauntlet, does each "task"/each bar of metal/each tanned hide produce one boot/glove/etc., or two?

Handwear & Footwear (including Socks I believe) is supposed to be dealt with in pairs.

So if you produce 2 units of boots, then assign them to Urist McGautier as uniform, he will attempt to wear boots over his boots (I think he'll actually loop into taking one set off to put the other on).

Do reservoirs need constructed ceilings in addition to constructed walls and floors? Or would dirt be just fine?

My reservoir is right under some buildings and stockpiles and crap, so if I had to do that, I'd probably kill someone.

Okay, I'm sure I'm just missing something in my newbie-ness.  How do I train war dogs?

I have dogs (tame, stray, in cages).
I have a kennel.
I have dwarfs with the all the Hunting skills on.
I have dogs who indicate they are willing to be trained.

And yet, when I go to the Kennel I'm told that there are no animals who can be trained to war dogs.  What am I doing wrong?

The Job to Train Dogs is "Animal Handling" or "Animal Training" or something along those lines, not Hunting.

I have on "Animal Training" and "Animal Care" on 2 Dwarfs with "No Job"
I have a tame, uncaged dog with a name and the preference "This animal is waiting to be trained"
I go to the Kennels and choose "Train War Animal"

The error exactly is:
Kol Rigothbekom Animal Trainer cancels  Train War Animal: No creature

I really don't understand what I'm missing.

I want to get rid of some of the little critters, can I just go to the objects folder, and delete them from their file?
