Cyntrox: Encrusting uses the "Gem Setting" skill, instead of the "Gem Cutting" skill. You probably have one but not the other.

Nickbii: It takes a long time, but dwarves will, eventually, clean mud and blood off smooth or engraved floors.
I have, however, seen mud start growing mushrooms about 2/3 of the time before it gets cleaned, and that makes it rough again, which means dwarfs ignore it for cleaning :P.  Mud where you don't want it is a huge pain sometimes.
And smoothing destroys mud.

How do I remove all of the "Deceased" dwarves in my unit list? It's been getting clogged up.
You can't.  Sorry.
Damn! Any idea when DF will actually be playable again?

Is there any way to remove mud outdoors?
Yea, use dirt roads to clear off the mud.

Have you appointed a chief medical dwarf? I think all the medical jobs require that position to be filled first.

Question:
Does it make sense to use intermediate stockpiles for wood, and maybe other raw materials? Like a big stockpile outside the fort to collect up the felled trees, and a smaller stockpile inside adjacent to the workshops that need wood.  This is instead of just the smaller indoor one.

Depends on how many haulers you have, how fast you're using up the wood, and how fast it's getting cut. If you're cutting wood fastert than you're using it, and you have a ton of spare labour, then it is fairly efficient. If you have a shortage of haulers, or your carpenters and wood burners are keeping pace with the woodcutters, it's just going to make everything much slower.

I have hundreds of cut logs out in the wilderness, but only a 10x10 space inside to store them. I made a big outdoor wood pile and every single dwarf got busy for about 3 minutes. Now most of the wood I cut is 50 steps away for a hauler to bring inside instead of 200 or more.  So I guess it works pretty well in this case.

How long does mud last? I have a muddy pool that's taking up 2 z-levels in my fort, but it's also the easiest thing for me to use to irrigate my farms. I want to know if I can remove it so I can build another room and 4 more workshops (it's taking up a 1/4 of a room in my workshop floor, and a bit on my main floor. Main floor isn't as bad since I can work around it).

So I can get rid of the water if I don't clean it up, never having to irrigate again?

Awesome.

Also, what about ice? My map is partly frozen right now, meaning some of the murky pools are solid but others (like the one surrounded by my fort) are not. Can I dig into the frozen lakes and make them part of my tunnels? Are there any consequences when it warms back up?

You can dig into ice, and even make some construcitons with ice, but natural ice walls will melt if the temperature gets too high. This can be disastrous to your dwarves if they are nearby. Similarly, when the ice refreezes, it can be even more deadly.

If you mine out ice and then make a construction with it, it will be invincible, though.

An interesting question here, what would happen if you were to rig up 2 overlapping drawbridges to drop on each other at the exact same time? Atom smasher vs Atom smasher...

You can't build a bridge where another building is already present, and a raising drawbridge counts as a building occupying the space even when it's raised.

Yes, and one with only diagnostics enabled.

I've done it successfully.

Can you tame fish?

Specifically, carp and wales. Carp for moats of doom when lava is non-existent or too far down, and wales because they're a freaking grocery store waiting to be bred.

And yes, I know wales are mammals. But for the purposes of this question, they are fish.
