I didn't feel like this was important enough to make a new topic about.

Anyway is it normal for a dwarf to craft a copper nugget drum and become a legendary engraver (he use to be adequate) from it? Either way though, I have a pretty darn useful dwarf now.
Yes, completely normal.

Not sure if this should go here... Are coins actually used for something now?

How exactly do crossbow (or other ranged) weapon traps work?  Because I'm trying to start trapping my entrance, and have a bunch of crossbows lying around from when I tried to teach my dwarfs the concept of ranged attacks.  I saw on the wiki that weapon traps activate when an enemy enters that tile, are crossbow traps any different?  Because it would seem kinda silly to have a crossbow trap that just shoots up.

Crossbow traps are pretty much the same as melee weapon traps in that when a creature steps on it the trap causes damage to it. The only real difference is that crossbow traps take ammo every time but don't get jammed with body parts like normal weapon traps. Avoid mixing ranged and melee weapons though, as the trap can still be jammed but still uses ammo.

Is there anything special to get military dwarfs to equip backpack/flask. Perhaps keeping said items outside a bin? Only some of my dwarfs have selected to pick up these items which I have 80+ spares of

edit: and is there a way to designate a stockpile for only objects to be melted?

Anyone know how many local squares to a region square, and region squares to a world square?

I suggest you don't think too much what you build and where. When ever you need something, build it as close as possible to where you need it. that way your fortress will eventually become epic

My weaponsmith has already forged two axes at a magmaforge, but I can't see them anywhere. They're not in the weapons stockpile right next to the forge and they're not in the inventories of either the smith or the axedwarf.

Use the "t" key to query the workshop. That's the command to see items in buildings, which is probably where they are.

You can also use the stocks screen to find all your weapons.

You should probably read the http://df.magmawiki.com/index.php/Military Military page on the wiki. It's kind of complicated for the first couple times you do it.

Question: I'm having a problem with garbage dump zones. I have been using these periodically to clear debris out of bedrooms or farms, but this time it's not working. I have a future farm plot full of stone that I want dumped, so I d-b-d selected all the squares with stones. I've got a garbage dump nearby but nobody's hauling.

The only difference between this time and all the last is I've decided to try out an atom smasher. The garbage dump zone occupies a 3x2 space that the smasher will occupy when it closes.

EDIT: Oh snap I think I figured it out. This farm plot is technically 'outside' since I tunneled down from the surface and covered the opening with green glass.

First, do you have any other dump zones? If so, are they being used?

Second, do you have burrows defined in either the farm or the atom smasher?

Third, is the farm plot properly acessible?

Fourth, is the stone you want to move forbidden?

No it was the outside/inside thing. I had to turn on 'gather refuse from outside' in the 'o'rders menu. Now my refuse pile is full to the brim with all kinds of goblin/troll/whatever bones though.
