If I want to raise livestock in an efficient manner, should I butcher any male animals past the first, or does it increase the likelihood of a pregnancy if I have several studs?

My last goblin siege was mounted, and a lot of their mounts ended up caged. I thought all would have to die in the arena, but they are all tameable from the kennels.

If I tame them will they actually be tame, or will they remain hostile?

Did they kill anyone?
No.

But my recently tamed Rutherer is still listed as "Hostile," and scaring the shit out of my dwarves. He's not actually attacking anyone, tho.

EDIT:
Spoke too soon. She just got into a nasty fight with some of my wolf cubs.

New question:

My latest set of besiegers has been around so long their mounts are bearing children. Specifically Alligator Hatchlings. They are immediately killed by the rest of the besieging army.

Why?

They're hungry?
hehe. Seriously, though, it has to do with the fact that they aren't registered as belonging to the invading civ. They are born on YOUR map.

That's silly.

Not quite as silly as the fact that one dude counts as a siege. Everyone else disappeared, except this one spearman, and a couple rogue alligators.

No, AFAIK.

In 31.06 how do I make tiles square instead of rectangular?

If it doesn't work, apply magma. If THAT doesn't work, apply Artifact Gabbro Cabinet

I was making a useless, non-humorous remark about physically altering the size of your monitor.

Please try to keep up.

That said, can Forgotten Beasts be made of any material? Or do they just have a lot of random fleshy limbs poking out and such?

Last game winter I was visited by Ereg Tubebdab Slospo Rabab, a Tundra Titan.  It appears to be a blob.  It ran (blobbed?) around the map for awhile before heading through the surface of my brook, into the 7/7 water layer, and then through my carved fortifications.  I thought I was completely hosed, but it stopped on the next square, my open floodgate.  It then sat there ignoring dorfs and visitors for almost a year.  Finally, some human merchants arrived followed by a goblin siege.  As the goblins were beating up on a human spearman, it came out, and laid waste to them all.  Then it slunk back to its hole past my fortifications to my open floodgate.  It's now missing its tail.  Does anyone have any explanation for this extraordinary behavior.  I can't understand why it hasn't invaded my fortress and killed everything.  How did it get past the fortification (underwater), but stop at the floodgate?  I don't dare shut the floodgate because it would presumably shatter.  All very odd.  Any insight would be most welcome.

I think creatures can be pushed through fortifications by water-pressure. Hell I think some can even just swim through.

Floodgates act more or less like walls IIRC.

As for why it hasn't invaded your fortress... Also no clue.

Open floodgates act like walls?  I thought they acted like open space.  My water inlet floogates, where dear Ereg likes to cuddle, are wide open.  Could it be too hot?

Open floodgates act like walls?  I thought they acted like open space.
Which is why I gave my abbreviated 'If I Recall Correctly'
I'm not entirely sure if they block creatures while opened as well as closed, but it's a possibility.

Someone should come clear this up before too long anyways.

in the new version, submerged fortifications can be moved through by swimming creatures.
I do not know if this holds true in magma, but I suspect it.
I also do not know if this holds true for flying creatures and regular fortifications that have walls above and around them. But I'd be curious to find out.
