Do missing limbs effect civilian life?

Two axegobbos got through my traps, cut the arms off every military dwarf (there were only 5), and proceeded to murdered half the fort. Nearly every survivor is missing at least one limb, but the tantrums and bleeding out seems to be subsiding now, and I really like this fort and want to keep it, but I'm worried that all these gimps will have difficulty getting anything done without any hands. Also I can build one hell of a mausoleum now with 40 dead to populate it.

I seem to be having a problem with farming. No matter what I do, my farmer won't plant crops. I made sure he had the necessary seeds and a proper farming plot, but he refuses to plant the seeds in them. Does anyone know what I might be doing wrong?

Did you irrigate the plots before setting them up?

Have you hit 'q' and set the seeds to be planted each season in the plot itself?

So Ledi's been training the cats into an army of disposable warbeasts?  Why did no-one think of this sooner?!
Hellcannon seemed to be constantly on the verge of death and Levergedon before my turn helped, but ultimately what killed it was Ledi's cat army.

It should be noted that with UG farming, every tile under the plot has to be muddied, even the soil tiles. If you don't, the farm will say you can plant, but the farmer will never plant a single seed.

I lost a fortress before I realized this. It was just one square. :(

You can minimize any such problems (and increase the diversity in the planting) by making smaller plots. Instead of a single 4x8, make two 4x4 for example.

Can floodgates (or anything, for that matter) be built on top of floodgates?

Alternatively, Do they have to be attached to the floor, Or can they hang off the roof/walls?

They don't hang off walls. But I hear you can glitch them into floating mode, if you open them, then deconstruct the wall holding them up. YMMV, I haven't gotten it to work.

Here's on I've been wondering about for a while now. Do Pressure Plates activate at once, or is there a delay?
For example, let's say I have a corridor filled with spike traps rigged to plates

XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX
oI oI oI oI oI oI oI oI
XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX

X = Walls
o= plates
I= traps

Will the traps trigger in time to spike whatever stepped on the plate on the tile before it? I want to use spikes, but I also want the system to be automated.

Don't traps just activate when stepped on? I know cage traps do...

Have you hit 'q' and set the seeds to be planted each season in the plot itself?

I haven't tried underground tiles yet because all of my irrigation projects have been spectacular failures. However, I do know that above ground farming isn't working for me. I tell the dwarves which seeds to plant, but they never do it. If I turn off everything aside from farming, my farmer just defaults to "No job".  This is probably an error on my part, but I can't figure out what it is. In the previous version I was able to farm easily, but now I can't.

1) Is there any way to create another fort in a world where I've already embarked?  Or do I have to generate a new world each time?
2) How can I see the world map after I've already embarked?

Make sure your "farmer" has the labor "Farming (Fields)" enabled...
Make sure this farmer has a path to the seeds and to the farm...
Make sure the farm tiles aren't already all planted with something...
Be patient and wait for the next season for your farmer to start planting stuff...
Seriously, I don't know, I've never had a problem with farming...

I've had similar problems, but I think its that when I order my dwarves to gather plants, all the plants they gather - wether they are grown plants or just seeds - appear in the farm menu.

I haven't yet tried building a fresh fortress and immediately building a plot to see if the plants all appear on the farm menu, but I suspect its one fo two reasons:

1) you are ordering them to plant crops that you don't have seeds for, but do have plantsfor. If you get your dwarves to eat them, or brew them, you should get seeds and then be able to plant them.

2) the farm menu shows all available crops, wether that is all, period or all available on that map.

I have no idea if any of the above is right, but its a theory.

ETA: sorry just read the part where you said you checked you had the seeds.

Sorry man, not sure what the problem might be :(

note to self: read the goddamn question before answering it!
