I haven't seen this asked anywhere, it seems to be taken for granted that people know, and... I don't  :(

How do I make cast powder, and what from? Is there an alternative to gypsum?

So I just decided to see about cooking up some of my extra booze to free up some barrels and my cook proceeded to carts 80% of my booze off to the kitchen and managed to make 2 roasts and left the rest of the booze in the kitchen, minus the barrels.  so I got my barrels back but the booze was just sitting in the kitchen.  So I deconstructed the kitchen hoping to recover it and now have a bunch of pools of random boozes where the kitchen was..  What gives?  I also seem to have no option to cook quarry bush leaves, so I have a bunch of bags tied up holding leaves which I aparrently can do nothing with :(

I can't for the life of me work out how to get my military dwarfs to hold weapons. I can go the the [m]ilitary screen and assemble a squad, hit [e] to go to the equipment screen and assign each of them a type of [W]eapon, and then tell the {s]quad to go somewhere or attack something, but they don't bother picking up equipment and instead just run there and wrestle their target. Is there something I'm missing out?

Can't answer the first question as I don't cook booze, but I'm pretty sure many of the food items don't have the tag in the raws that enables their use for cooking. Quarry bush leaves, various meat products, and some others don't have'em.

One of my dwarves was cut on the leg and the medical staff managed to clean it, but they have been attempting to suture it for months now and at this point its just a scar. It still says "needs suturing" and "needs dressing" in the health tab but they seem to be too unskilled to do it, or unable because its healed already.

edit: the perpetual practice has made my medical staff pretty adequate as far as suturing goes, so it must be something with the demands for aid not being cleared. also, the dwarf is still laid up, even though they have no real injury anymore.

Does surgery have an associated skill? And if so, does it increase appropriately in the current version?

My chief medical dwarf has been trying to operate on a smashed finger for over a month now, and still shows no skill in surgery.

is anybody else having an issue with thier miners not mining? at almost all times only one of my miners will feel like working at a time, and its not like their getting in eachothers way, i have tons of stuff designated to be mined out.  is this a bug or are my miners just lazy?

I'm a new player, and a crappy programmer, so I may be making a stupid error when running the program, but when I go to the "labor" menu in the new DF mode, the only 4 sub-menus that pop up are "mining", "healthcare", "hauling", and "other jobs"....can some one help me?

being new, you might want to play 40d for a while and learn the basics before you start playing the new buggy and more complicated DF2010 where not even the veterans know whats going on.
