They should use them by default, but if they don't, look under u: supplies and see if they're ordered to carry food and drink.

Also, I can't find nakd mole dogs or giant bats anywhere in the raw files. They're not in next_underground...where are they? Elk birds, too.

They're in creature_subterranean. Windows, and presumably other operating systems, has the option of looking for phrases in files, so things like that are easily and quickly found on your own. I don't think anyone here minds answering such questions, but I figured I might as well "teach a man to fish" while I'm at it.

The laptop I'm on runs Windows 7.

That should basically tell you why I'm not using the search function.

Hehe, no man, I kid. Thanks.

Yeah, yeah. Anyway - do you need to add something specifically to make an animal trainable for war (I know about setting [PET: EXOTIC] to just [PET] if there's no dungeon master) besides [TRAINABLE] under [PET]? For example, giant cave swallows - I saw they had a [TRAINABLE:HUNTING] tag, does the [TRAINABLE] tag make them trainable for war?

I have yet to train anything in .31, but assuming it works the way it always has, just trainable is enough. Dogs have that and you should be able to train war dogs as before.

How do I get marksdwarves to pick up their combat bolts? I have a lot of bolts made of iron, bronze and steel, but when I set them to their combat alert they arrive with the bone and wood bolts they have been carrying around for training.  :-\

Un-assign their training bolts. helps me, at least.

Has cave adaption been toned down in .31? My dwarves have spent the better part of the last 16 years underground and I have yet to see one of them puke when chopping some wood or something.

ok, so with ballistas if i channel a row of tiles infront of the wall they hit the ballista bolts are saved. would this work with regular bolts on training targets if i dug a channel infront of them? basically, are bolts preserved if they fall a z level(im pretty sure they are)
and if they hit somthing then fall(like ballista bolts) will they be preserved?
