just two check, if i stuffed in two more gigs of ram, would that up the performance of dwarf fortress for me?

Probably, depending on how much you currently have, and how much DF is using. If you've got 2 or less, and have the space for 2 more, then I would probably do it. 3 or more, and DF probably isn't even using all of the remaining space.

2x1GB sticks is probably cheaper than 2 more 512 sticks.... Old memory is old :P

Just make sure you get DDR2. I'm gonna guess you're on an old enough box that it doesn't have DD3.

Swing and a miss. DDR400!

Ouch dude. Just ouch.

I was incredibly lucky today. Found a beatiful embark Location and even found Magma on Level 107!

My only problem now is, that the distance between my future Magmaworkshops and my main Fort is pretty big. First my Dorfs have to walk from Level 141 to Level 110, after that to a different Stairway (a cave was in the way, and i have no Weapons or Military to deal with anything that can come out of those) that leads to level 107. And finally a about 30-40 Tiles walk to the Magma. Its a bit far isnt it? Is there a way to move the Magma up a few Levels? Or should i just accpet the long walk?

Relocate your main fort to the magma workshops area.

Honestly at the time, I didn't see what could go wrong with crowding 80 military Dwarves into a small room with a necromancer for the purpose of making bacon.

You can use a pump stack to move the magma, or just use burrows to confine your metalworking to the magma area. If you set your stockpiles right, and dump the ore down to them, you'll just be hauling bins of stuff out of there.

Is there any way to convert a murky pool floor into farmable ground if I've channeled an area out around the pool itself to the open air?

I built walls on the tiles, but I'm sure a floor or some other construction would work as well. Then remove the construction. It'll turn to grass, so you'll be golden.

Alright, after fucking up my pump stack 2 times due to leaking magma spilling water on the aquifer holding ice walls I've finally rebuilt it all without any chance for magma to leak back in.
Now all pumps are fucking frozen elsewhere. Any ideas what's going wrong?

I've embarked on an area with NO water, but plenty of ice.
is there a way to melt the stuff in buckets or barrels or something, bring it down stairs and use it to make mud for a mushroom farm?

if so, how?

The collapse method (requires at least two z-levels of ice) or magma-heating are your only options for getting usable water from ice, I'm afraid. I tend towards the latter, since the only reason I EVER embark in a freezing biome is because there's a volcano there.

A dwarf here simply won't get off military duty, even though I not only set his squad to an inactive alert but then, because he also won't drink any water or booze, disbanded the squad in hopes he would stop being on duty and go get a drink. He's not depressed, he's ecstatic in fact. I haven't set any burrows at all or any order restrictions. What is up with this guy?

Relocate your main fort to the magma workshops area.

Maybe i try this one, but i dont have much room down there with all the Caves and Magma Seas^^

@ Lord Shonus idea

I Thought Burrows applied to all Dwarfs, wouldnt all of them hang around in the Area? Also i could make the Sleeping Rooms close to the Forges for the Workers, but they would still need to walk back up because my Meeting Hall is there, is there a way around that? And with the Pit, i know ho to designate one, but how do i make Dorfs drop things into it?

I think I heard it's possible to show/view this, but idk how. Is it possible (if so, how) to view why the world genorator rejects worlds? It would really help, the seed I'm working on is causing 1000+ rejects, and I can't see why.

Twenty seconds after the collapse, 14 dwarves hit the ground simultaneously.
EDIT: make that 15. Not sure what took that last one so long.
