Quick and relatively newb question:

Do barrels get consumed once the things in them are used?  I ask because I keep having to build new barrels for my brewers to put drinks into.  I figured that they'd be able to use existing barrels that have been emptied of drink.  Or am I potentially farming/fishing/hunting too much as well?  The end result is that I'm running out of booze and when I try to brew more they can't because there are never empty barrels.

Barrels are recycled.  You are running bout of barrels because they are getting filled with meat, fish, and plants.

Either make more barrels, or reorganize your stockpiles so that meat, fish, and plants are stored in dedicated stockpiles with zero max barrels, so that the barrels will be reserved for liquids.

oh and another question i tamed a giant cave spider and i read that only way to capture a forgotten beast is to web a cage how do i do this?
Build a lot of cage traps in a hallway, and have one of the hallway's walls as fortifications.
Chain the GCS near the other side of the fortifications, and I think it will web any hostiles going by.

Wow! I'd forgotten that webs would work! All that time and effort spent engineering clouds of dust from caveins to knock that FB into a cage, and I could have used webs!

Is it outdoor vs indoor crops, or aboveground vs underground?

Basically, if I dig out and rebuild the ceiling of my farm, will I be able to grow strawberries and suchlike?

"Light" vs. "Dark" - so aboveground vs underground

Why is my marksdwarf so retarded!!!

This one single marksdwarf - Mosus, cannot get his shit together. Hes butt-naked, running around putting his crossbow, quiver, and ammo in stockpiles, picking them up, and placing them in other places. I have two or three other marksdwarves who have figured out i want them to have a crossbow and metal bolts. They all wear clothes except Mosus. He won't keep his quiver, or bolts, or crossbow. He usually has one of the three, and/or is hauling another of the three to a stockpile. Why does this bastard not get it while my other marksdwarves get it?

Does he have hunting labor enabled? Turn it off, the combination screws up uniforms.

You were entirely correct. I removed hunting from his job list, as well as from another, and suddenly they were perfect, just in time to help my main marksman gun down a couple dozen elves that tried to raid us! That was perfect timing for them to get their shit together. We unloaded on these elves from our walls. I dont know how many we killed but that was really awesome to watch. Thank you very much for the help.

One other thing; when i cancelled the "station" order for my marksdwarves, one of them became a hunter again, even though he doesnt have hunting enabled and he's still enlisted. Why isn't he still a marksdwarf, and will he continue to practice archery?

Since marksdwarves don't train archery when set to a schedule with a training order you did right by leaving them on inactive. The downside is that they will switch back to their civilian profession whenever you cancel an order (will even happen if they're already elites). If you disabled all their civilian labors they will however soon go back to training (their profession will state their highest civilian skill until you give them an order again).

(their profession will state their highest civilian skill until you give them an order again).

You can get around that by giving them custom professions.

Before embarking, is there anything which would indicate that an area has huntable animals? Like "Surrounding : Untamed Wilds" (which has never guaranteed animals no matter the season, from my experience).

I'm just wanting leather without having to kill crazy subterranean beasts/humanoids or by trade/pets.

a) There are always animals. If you want stuff to butcher, you'd want non-evil biomes (no undead), with a preference towards calmer areas (because some savage areas contain slugmen, snailmen, and tigermen, all of which are sapient and thus unbutcherable without modding).

b) Up your embark points in world gen and bring leather with you.

Hi

Running 31.18 with Phoebus Graphics from the Lazy Newbs pack.

All good, dwarves less stupid than before but still fun - my only problem is that war dogs don't have any graphics.  They are brown blocks running about, which means I can't see then most of the time.

I've looked in the files but have no clue what I'm doing.  Can someone tell me, or show me where I can see, how to play with the little animal graphics, so at least I can put something animal like in there.
