Wooden blocks will work, but they'll burn out after some period of time and you'll need to replace them periodically.  Your best bet rather than using blocks is to use cups, because you get three for each unit of raw material rather than one.  This also works if you're using a flammable stone like graphite or coal, you want to use stone mugs rather than blocks.

If I build a wall across a frozen river, will it stay up when the river thaws? Would it use the same support mechanics as gears and axles?

It will stay up, assuming its connected to some land or supports.

Will this work for my fire?
Code: [Select]
___|.___<
____*____
< is catapult
. is space
_ is floor
| is wall
* is fire

The plan is to start the fire, then launch bitumutous coal and lignite into the hole.

It CAN work, assuming you are willing to accept wasting bitco/lignite when your operator misses.

Where do you designate a sand collection area? I first tried to set on up on a bunch of sand floor tiles, but that didn't seem to work, then I set one up on actual sand blocks, however that did not work either.

Sand floor tiles.
Do you know why it didn't work?

Damn I feel stupid. Turns out it was sandy loam. I found a regular sand patch and got it working.

Do dwarves only need exposure to light in order to prevent cave adaptation, or do they need to be both outside and in light?

I want to be able to have multiple fires and I can't guarentee that many artifacts. I'm currently thinking of using wooden blocks.

I've seen mentioned that lignite floor grates, once ignited, stay lit forever, even if submerged in water.  I have not tested this.

(Don't attempt to answer that.  Down that path lies ... well I was going to say madness but you all run towards madness as if it was made from chocolate and puppies.  Just forget I said anything.)

Just light, as far as I know.

What does it mean if, in the militia equipment screen, there's a picture of a weapon rack behind the equipement?

If soldiers grow attached to their clothing (by way of too-early-danger-room), will they ever replace it to wear actual armor?

If they don't just dump it away or wait till it degrades away. Besides a legendary dodger/shield user doesn't really need armor anyway.

owned items shouldn't be eligible for dumping... and it takes quite some time for clothing to degrade away :/

While it may not strictly be necessary, i still want them to wear real armor for the feel... and some protection.

Last siege i've had two dwarves die because of being knocked over by a charge (even if it was dodged) and then being hammered because of the strong speed penalty of being prone.

Why can I assign my woodcutter either mining, or woodcutting, but not both?

@Footjob, you can microwave most grains I've tried pretty easily through the microwave, even if they aren't packaged for it.
