How do you dig up/down z-levels?
Down:
- dig a channel: d - h
- dig a stair down: d - l
- dig a up/down stair: d - i

Up:
- dig a ramp: d - r
- dig a stair up: d - o
- dig a up/down stair: d - i

(for stairs do that on both levels)

What Fellhuhn means with that last sentence is that stairs on one floor must have stairs on the floor above and/or below to connect to. It's not enough to dig stairs down, you also need to dig stairs up in the exact same square but 1 Z-level down.

Aye, but I am too lazy to try my language skills at such complex explanations. :D

If you designate (and dig) a down stairway the tile beneath it will be visible (instead of simply black), so it is easy to find the correct spot (without constantly switching the z-levels). You can also designate areas with your mouse while switching z-levels with the keyboard.

So i just lowered the pop cap and read the explanation once again. It says you need 80 pop for a king and 100 for the current game features. What are/is that feature? Every time i get a king i don't get anything else afterwards even if I stay with that fort for years. Do some megabeasts like dragons/titans/colossi have population requirements?

Somewhat related, does a world get depleted from numerous fortresses and adventurers taking on the local forgotten and megabeast population? I'm currently on my third fort in this world and it has been attacked by only one cyclops so far and has been going for 6 six years.

Non related:
I played every fort with the same civilization. The first fort received the queen and was abandoned after i had made enough weapons and armor for my adventurer, it was then abandoned with everything intact. The second fort received the same queen, but she was just staying at the map edge marked as friendly and wouldn't move in. So i released a minotaur next to her. In my current fort this civilization only lists a general as leader, so i guess it will be impossible for me to obtain a king/queen.
Will the civilization eventually appoint a new leader during fortress mode or adventure mode, or do leaders only take over civs during worldgen?

Hey all, why does it usually say 'summer has arrived' and sometimes say 'summer has arrived on the calendar' ? :o

little things make DF interesting.

So i just lowered the pop cap and read the explanation once again. It says you need 80 pop for a king and 100 for the current game features. What are/is that feature? Economy? Every time i get a king i don't get anything else afterwards even if I stay with that fort for years. Do some megabeasts like dragons/titans/colossi have population requirements? titans have worldgen requirements. 80 default. I think others have this too. FB's just attack if you breach ANY layer of caverns.

Somewhat related, does a world get depleted from numerous fortresses and adventurers taking on the local forgotten and megabeast population? Yes and no. No, 'cause adventurers are generated out of thin air. Yes, 'cause those beasts no longer exist. I'm currently on my third fort in this world and it has been attacked by only one cyclops so far and has been going for 6 six years. small world? make a large one with shittons of savagery.

Bug. Members of the old population are flagged as such forever. So i released a minotaur next to her. In my current fort this civilization only lists a general as leader, so i guess it will be impossible for me to obtain a king/queen. yep
Will the civilization eventually appoint a new leader during fortress mode or adventure mode, or do leaders only take over civs during worldgen? try adventuring a lot. it should happen.

Military issues.
Got a lot of dwarves running around in incomplete sets of salvaged goblin armour rather than the multiple sets of exceptional steel armour their uniforms specifically state they should be wearing.
But some of them are simply not picking p armour and charging into battle with their most effective pigtail socks. Any work arounds as I know that military is still quite buggy.

Do traction benches need to be next to the bed, or next to a surgery table in a hospital?

Bed|Table|Traction Bench OR Traction Bench|Bed|Table

Another: Does causing war in Fortress Mode cause the whole race, or just the faction to go to war with you? Do they go to war with all Dwarves, just your faction, or just your Fortress (could I make a new fortress with the same faction and not be at war)?

Well I just looked and saw that they have a lot of material in its standard dwarven state of tattered rags and then some brand new items. Leather mittens and whatnot which I find very perplexing considering their uniform is very specific on only steel armours.

Traction|Bed|Table works.

Being at war causes the civ you are at war with to become the enemy of your civ.
If you have multiple human/elf/goblin civs, going to war with one of them should not effect relations with the others.
I could be wrong.

Do traction benches need to be next to the bed, or next to a surgery table in a hospital? No, but it seems to help as dwarves are not very good with handling bench <-> distance

Another: Does causing war in Fortress Mode cause the whole race, or just the faction to go to war with you? Do they go to war with all Dwarves, just your faction, or just your Fortress (could I make a new fortress with the same faction and not be at war)?no they just specifically punish your fort

I'm not sure what your question is, but regardless of your settings dorfs will pick up alternative pieces if nothing exist for said slot. Morever, mitten can be worn over gauntlets.

I've got a nice fortress running with 20 dwarves currently. My FPS is a little shaky for some reason, and my FPS temporarily dies while the entire map flash-freezes and thaws in an instant.

If you mean when water freezes/thaws, then that is normal.
