Managers make lining up a specific number of production orders considerably easier. Say you want to build a pump stack 50 z-levels tall. You could manually set jobs at a workshop for the 150 pieces necessary, or put in an order with the manager for all the components, and let him get the jobs rolling while you focus on digging the shaft and organizing the military to scope out the cavern.

However, if you're in no need for specific large numbers of items you can do without. I find it a great time saver.

I use the manager to make a specific number of thread/cloth items, so that I always have enough of each kind of thread and cloth for mood/hospital use.

There's one really important aspect to the manager beyond the "large orders" deal: manager-given orders automatically renew if a workshop cancels them.  (There's a time delay, so you won't get an infinite number of job cancellation messages.)  Thus, I will use the manager even for small orders if I want to be completely sure the target number gets finished.

Two questions:

1) Is there a way to see what a moody dwarf requires after (s)he has taken over a shop but before (s)he starts gathering specific materials?

2) What's the melting point for coke and charcoal (or do we even know)?

1. [ q ] over the workshop. it will say stuff like "blah blah blah wants blah blah". Or differently. Check the wiki to see what they want and what sort of mood it is. you can also see materials and things in a workshop through [ t ] and can forbid materials to make them get something else.

2. Charcoal/coke has no melting point, it just burns. Well, in DF that is. Because "there is always air" and air physics aren't model'd (yet!)

not exactly, but really close. isn't capn duck's tutorial .12? look at it 'cause health's remained pretty much the same, and military has been upgraded.

but don't confuse yourself.

While you can q over a mood-claimed workshop to get materials if you lack something you wont get that info if everything is in stock.  It just tells you who has it.  This bugs me, if you miss the start and hes already moving for something it can be hard to forbid restrict them onto a specific material

On chairs, by 200 dwarves I usually have around 35-40 tables and chairs in my hall if a single site.  This is often not full but if a couple of parties go down you can start to run short, for safety you might want to go a bit bigger, ive just never got round to it since the walls are already masterpieced and its smallish.

If I don't do something crazy in other places, I just make a restaurant. Putting in artifacts works wonders  ;)

generally, 20-40 are enough. If you are very stingy, however, you can force your dorfs to evenly distribute table use over time which then'd use 8-12.

they will sleep in a without you telling them to do so. i.e. automatically.
