Is there any cancellation spam?
Also, do you use Dwarf Therapist? Some people say that there are problems with the miner and woodcutter professions being assigned with DT, so just activate them manually.

How big of a military should a fortress have?  Right now I've got 3 squads of 6-7 dwarves each, and I'm running at 167 total population. I'm in a non-evil embark locale, and I've only had one small Goblin siege. Should it only be 10-15% of total population?

At that size I'd probably have set up a roster of at least 40 soldiers, but that's mainly preference. You have dug into caverns, right? Don't those send any trouble?

Greaves and leggings both protect the legs, and cannot be layered. Boots cover the feet.
Thanks, I suspected something like that, but was not sure. Thanks for clarification. :)

I'd be surprised if you were able to find jobs for 160+ dwarves with only a small handful in the military.

Go to zones [ i ], make a [p]it/pond, and assign the goblin to it.
Be aware that thieves will try to escape while being brought to the pit.

to fuzzy i think i did something wrong. i made the pit/pond zone i made it 3 tiles long and it said innappropriate building, i knocked the gob unconcious but apparently it says hes dead so one down 2 left. what do? i made the zone bigger now. is he suppose to stay in the cage? also to add to this is it possible to stop a soldier from killing a goblin once hes stopped it from running? to capture it in other words ordering him to move away does nothing.

Not quite sure what's wrong with your pit, you could always just build the cajes in your barracks and link them to a lever.

If you deactivate your military, your dwarves should just run away.

So I just got asked to choose a baron. I want to choose someone with crappy needs not solid platinum mini forges or something.
I pressed abort, so I could look at dwarves needs then redo it, but the liason left.

I get to choose a baron later right? Or is this no baron end of story now?
Not that I care.. is there an advantage to having a baron?

I'm doing a succession game, and all the dwarves are stuck inside. Whenever I tell them to do something outside, the cancel because it is apparently a forbidden area. How can I fix this?

Check the [m]ilitary [a]lerts screen, there may be burrows active.
You could also try deleting everything on the burro[w]s screen.
