Cancel the construction and re-activate it, and make sure somebody has the proper labor on.

Is there any reason why ghosts wandering my fortress wouldn't appear on the Engrave Memorial list? I have like, ten of them wandering around.

Dead traders/caravan guards probably.

The last time I checked, though, you could dedicate a slab/bury to caravan-goers.

I downloaded and began playing a pre-generated world, which began in the middle of a pre-made fortress. I abandoned that immediately and ran off to start one of my own, but finding the graphics alien and repulsive to the Synergy pack I use, I replaced them with a copy of the Graphics Folder from another region. That took care of the sprites, and some of the basic terrain seems to be what I am used to, but all of the minerals and earthen-materials are still not what they should be.

Am I missing something? Will I be unable to play this world with my usual mineral/material graphics? Oh, I hope not. The walls of rough selenite look like tiny images of little yellow chicks gnawing on rice balls. It mica me sad.

Sprites are saved in the game saves themselves, to some degree, I believe. I know that Phoebus' version comes with a savegame updater for new versions. So you probably need to do that, somehow. Check the specific graphics pack you use.

Since it came with a graphics pack of its own, the pre-genned world is probably using slightly different RAWs then what your usual set of graphics are expecting. You can fix it by modifying the 'inorganic_X' files in the save and changing the [TILE:X] tags to something that'd fit your current tileset.

How does one go about modding out aquifiers?

Forgotten Beasts seem to be akin to Toady playing Russian Roulette with your fortress, as they can be anything from harmless giant worms made of mud to necrotic-gas spewing nigh-invunerable iron hydras of doom.

either get the lazy newb pack for all your needs  ;) (link: http://www.bay12forums.com/smf/index.php?topic=59026.0)
OR go to your raws folder and find all "inorganic_blahblahblah" and [Ctrl]-[H] Replace the [AQUIFER] tags in the stones with {AQUIFER} (for future reference)

so, i have an interesting problem. and by problem, i mean several hundred buck-naked trolls and goblins in cages, in a giant room of walls taking up space in my tree farm, right next to the massive river-intake system i built to muddy said tree farm (it taking up half a Z and all.. i over-engineer, i'm sorry). now, attaching mechanisms to each and every cage is going to take somewhere between the space of forever and the next big bang, so i'm looking for a easier solution, and i may have it, but i wanted to run it by others before making a complete clustereff of it.

trolls are building destroyers, yeah? so, they can destroy cages, yeah? releasing the occupant from said cage (and does this destroy the cage?) to whatever outside horror may be waiting, such as a wall of water? but not walls so that about eight seiges, a score or three of snatchers, and more ambushes than i care to.. uh.. care about dont pay a social visit to my plantation next door, and, in fact, the entire fortress of 150 peaceful dwarves? (still working on training methods.. saving a couple gobbos for that..)

won't work I think, sorry. when they destroy the cage the cage doesn't get destroyed it gets un-fixed (like an object not a building) and so... yeah. and flooding them won't work (as you have mentioned) but magma will.

or, my favorite, instead of killing them make a huge "shooting gallery" for training ballista operators (using catapults for longer training time  ;D) and archers is also really fun. just make it far enough to avoid spam.

Also try making a pit at least 10 z-levels deep. then put all non-thieves there. presto, goblin mulch. sometimes they only get mangled. set up the training room there  ;D

cant get access to magma, dont have enough metal corkscrews because i've got no fuel on the map and too many damn goblin invasions to spare it for anything but steel outfits for my undertrained dwarves. which is why i need magma. sense made? but yeah, i'll get to work on the mechanisms then. and catapult bits. hmm...

You could shove all the goblins and trolls in a single cage and connect a lever/plate to that single cage.
