Anywhere from near instantly to never.

For minor injuries such as bruising, a dwarf with good natural healing can recover in the middle of a fight or within a day in-game

For cuts, dwarves with great healing can recover by themselves after a few days. For others they will have to be sutured up by a doctor, and will be healed as soon as the doctor finishes, though they stand the chance of dying to infection.

For torn and or broken body parts, the dwarf may never recover and survival depends heavily on toughness and healing ability. Doctors can repair the damage but infection rates are high since soap usage and medical treatment is buggy.

Severed nerves will never recover and are crippling injuries.

Do cage traps reveal ambushes?

As it turns out, the pen was in fact a poor choice for melee combat in comparison to the sword.
So I just started playing this game and I accidentally nuked the moon.

ive gotten in the habit of replacing my chief medical dwarf as soon as he gains any notable skill in diagnosis.
It's really funny watching them do unnecessary surgery because of a wrong diagnosis.
the conditions were bad enough to turn a dwarf who didn't care about anything mad, that's pretty hardcore.

How do I increase FPS? I know I shouldn't be complaining with ~42FPS at 208 dwarves, but I still want to increase it.

Cage all animals.
Wall off unused sections.
Do ambush sweeps.

That's all I can think of right now.

Of the 400 animals we have, 50 are pets and refuse to be shoved in a box.
We have no unused sections.
All the ambushes are gathered beneath an atom smasher anyway, they are dead now.

Why wont my suturer sow up my patients? i have thread!
Does he have the labor enabled?
Is the thread inside a container (not a stockpile) inside the hospital?
Is he acknowleged as needing sutures on the health screen in the z-menu? (If not, this could be the fault of the chief medical dwarf.)
Does he have other treatments that take priority? (Cleaning, etc.)

They'll stuff hospital-appropriate stuff into the coffers. The thread might or might not get there first; you may need more than one coffer.

Thread and cloth usually go in first; I had to build like eight containers in my previous fort because my dwarves kept stuffing them with cloth past the limit.
