Are you walled off?
If you have enough time, you could construct a line of cage traps across your entrance, I'm pretty sure hydras don't avoid traps.

It's really funny watching them do unnecessary surgery because of a wrong diagnosis.
the conditions were bad enough to turn a dwarf who didn't care about anything mad, that's pretty hardcore.

Read the wiki again:
"It seems that it neither destroys nor avoids traps, and can be eliminated just by having about 50 stone-fall traps in its way, or one simple cage trap."

A cage trap will take it out.

My question:
Where can I see full logs. I had a weird situation happen a little while ago and I want to see if I can find out what happened. I had a dwarf die on his way to a party or at a party. The only main messages I got were "Dwarf cancels attend party" "dwarf struck down!" but it didn't say by who, or what, or anything else.

Check the top left of the screen.
If there is a "C", you have unread combat reports and can look at them in the [r]eports screen.

Do ambushes and seiges strictly come at 50 and 80 respectively?

Or if I produce enough wealth, and am below the thresh-hold will they come nonetheless?

I believe you need all the requirements, 80 dwarves, 100k created wealth, etc.

Is there a way to modify that for those of us with crappy framerate?

Yeah, that'd be nice. I keep it low as anything above 50 or so dwarves is a headache to keep track of, but it's kinda boring without opposition.

When generating a world, use parameters. One of the parameters is Megabeast Attack Prereq. Not sure if that''ll help with sieges, but it'll give you something.

AFAIK, opposing civs attack based on wealth, not pop.

[ s ]quads, [m]ove.
They should switch to military mode and attack any hostiles they see.

Need any other help with the military?

I went ahead and asked about modding goblins to attack at a lower population threshold, and sure enough you can mod them to do such a thing.

Are sieges and caravans scheduled to come at the same time in the latest version? It seems almost every time I get a caravan, just as they're getting into my fortress, a vile force of darkness shows up then it turns into some game of how I'm going to get them out before they go insane. I would say the last 4 or 5 caravans straight have all come with a siege moments after.
