What's the best way to make my jeweler stop encrusting splints and barrels with rubies?

Sorry if asked previously, 350 pages is a lot to go over.

One way is to have a smaller work room off your main work room, which contains a jeweler's shop and a craftsdwarf's shop (cause you might as well decorate with bone while you're at it. Bring the supplies you want to encrust, and the gems into the room through garbage dumbs zones, etc. Then, get your encruster in their, forbid-passage on the door, then give him his order. The only thing he can reach is what you gave him to encrust, so he uses that.

Voila.

I just know I'd end up hearing "Jeweler has died of thirst!" if I did it like that. I think I'll try using this new burrow feature. I really like how it works so far for designating barracks/training area/fortifications for military and civ emergency (GET INSIDE, STAY INSIDE).

There used to be a complete package with Dwarf Fortress for Windows, Ironhand's Tileset, Dwarf Therapist matching the DF version and some other software. It was linked somewhere in the forum here. I can't find it anymore. Does it still exist and where?

You mean The Lazy Newb Pack?

Currently it includes DF .16, and the most current version of DF is .18. A most excellent pack though, I'm still using it. :)

Well, you gotta keep an eye on him until he's finished.

Are we talking about encrusting 1 suit of armour or a dozen?

Is there a way to put already-dead dwarves into a coffin? I was going to build crypts for my original 7, but didn't get around to it until one of them met with an unfortunate accident.. I'd still like to provide him a proper burial though.

Make a graveyard stockpile near it, they'll put the body there first and into a coffin after.

Can tigermen get through pet-passable doors? I don't have time to monitor him, and not sure how he got in there, but I don't want him to starve to death.

EDIT: He's sleeping now, so I can't see if he's pawing at the hatch or just walking through. But he's sleeping in a meat stockpile, so it'll be awhile before starvation is an issue.

Melee damage. Also, higher quality bows boost a unit's effective archery skill.

Just build the coffin and select "use for burial" when you {q} over it.

"A theif has stolen a rough star rubies"

is this a new one?  usually when something is stolen by a creature the creature is named, say a rhesus mecaque.

most definitely a kobold thief - i have like a bazillion things on the surface and i get it all the time. be careful if you dont have a good military or defenses. kobolds get bold (no pun intended) and once they've stolen enough stuff they'll ambush you like the goblins do. only they can pass through locked doors and are immune to traps. they die easy though if you have a decent military.

ETA: I just fought off a siege and wound up with a caged Voracious Cave Crawler. It is listed as a "caged prisoner" rather than a "caged wild animal". Am I to presume this would preclude taming it for the fort's benefit?

i'd say its precluded anyway - its probably an exotic so it needs the DM which is a bugged noble that never comes. editing the raws can make it pettable (and tell you if it already is, which i doubt) but i dont remember exactly how its done.

I used the hack which find/replaces the exotic tags with more mundane ones, so yeah, it did show up in the options for my kennel, but even after "taming" it's tagged as a "caged prisoner", so I'll have to put it out of its misery the hard way, apparently.

If it's a 'prisoner' then it's already an enemy of your fort and civilization. Even if you tame it, it'll be hostile.

Btw it means Zotir the Hellish Abbys of midnights. Died after being bisected by an untrained dwarf's bare right hand.

I build the object ( usually a statue) or make a stockpile for that object down to quality. They'll usually check the stockpile before they check anything else, or take the nearest un-used object. Always worked for me and my mega statues.

A wounded dwarf who is unconscious/unable to walk, and stays unconscious/unable to walk while being brought to the hospital.
Also, a jobless dwarf with the labor enabled.
