whenever i try to use my old save in 31.17 (after using the savegame updater) it says Fatal Error:missing word definition
has worked all the way from 31.12 to 31.16 and still works on 31.16(ironhand graphic set)

ya a bunch of new tokens were added in .17, which makes old saves unusable.

Saves from previous versions should still work in .17.  I just copied my fortress from 31.16 and opened it in 31.17 with no errors.  I don't know what the savegame updater does, but simply copying the folders over works for me.

I've been trying to get to grips with this game for weeks now, trying different things and starting fortresses over and over again (on diff maps and worlds). So far I've progressed nice and slow up the learning mountain but aquifiers have me stumped, specifically how to pump from them. I've read the wiki (must have read every article in there by now!) and know how to do it, the problem is it's not working. I embarked with 4 pumpers and 2 masons to ensure I could quickly build a passage through the aquifier but the pumpers aren't pumping fast enough. I saved right before I started this engineering project and have retried it a few times with tweaks but haven't gotten anywhere yet.

I have a 7x7 space chaneled out into the aquifier and 4 pumps each placed in the centre of a side of this chanel. I've sorted out chanels for the pumped out water (back into the aquifier behind the pumps). I can't get the water pumped out fast enough. Depth dances between 1 and 4 over all the tiles. I've tried to put up my own walls on the aquifier wall side tiles when they reach a depth of 1 and continually unsuspend the construction but the masons never build them.

Do I need more than 4 pumps for this? Do I need to wait for experience levels to rise in the pumpers? I need to break through the aquifier soon, it's only one layer thick (in sand) but until I break through I have no stone other than what I embarked with.

Thanks.

Pumps are the worst way to try to deal with aquifers. The best way is the cave-in trick.

Why are you trying to wall off the aquifer? Smoothing the aquifer stone is a lot easier.

Except that as I read it, the aquifer is in sand. So no smoothing.

Yeah, no cave in's (only one layer of sand above it) and no smoothing. There's a possibility of using a place with two layers of sand to drop into the aquifier but I was trying to keep my pathway down in the centre of the map. I intend to flaten the whole map to make an above ground city using the ibsidian below the aquifier.

Breaching all 3 layers of caverns make my fps go down at least 30%, maximum of 150%, is there any way to avoid it? Also, if i don't use magma for anything then workshops, will turning off the temperature will affect anything, than freezing/thawing of water? Also2, if i set cavern layers to 1, will this only cavern be equal to the third cavern in vanilla, or to the first?

Thank you.

I play with only one cavern layer for similar reasons (I also like to dig straight down to magma right away.) I can confirm seeing cavern layer three critters, though I don't often see cavern layer three plants.

http://df.magmawiki.com/index.php/Cavern

Looking here, it looks like having only one cavern layer will randomly pick creatures/plants that could have existed among all cavern layers. Having 2 layers makes the first cavern normal and the second cavern random between 2 and 3.

Saves from previous versions should still work in .17.  I just copied my fortress from 31.16 and opened it in 31.17 with no errors.  I don't know what the savegame updater does, but simply copying the folders over works for me.
i tried this but every time i load it, about 10 seconds after i resume it crashes and says
"could not read :somthing but ive forgotten what"
if i abandoned the fortress, then transfered across, then reclaimed, would it work?(no maybes, yes or no)
still works on 31.16, any other way to move it?

As a more general question, does this mean every time an update like this one comes out ill have to start a new region? cause i aint got the time to keep starting over and over again when i havent lost.

No. The whole point of the "2010" release was that save breaking releases weren't supposed to happen for a while after that. But I think that this one was too awesome to hold back on.

If i place fortifications for a roof, can my marksdwarves shoot at whatevers above them?

Also, do all megabeasts avoid traps, and do all semi-megabeasts not avoid traps?

All megabeasts avoid traps, not sure about the fortifications or semi-megabeasts.
