Hmm, I've just found my first fortress, and i cannot seem to find a way in. Is there a trick to it?

Dwarven fortress in adventure mode?
Find a rectangular hole. This is the entrance, and it should have stairs down the side.
Use the [>] key to go downwards on stairs.

In the vein of the Adventure mode questions...

I often can't get into shops or cottages during the day because a random peasant is standing in the doorway, or just on the other side of the doorway. Is there a way to slide or push past them?

Press 's' in order to lay on the ground, and then you can worm your way underneath them.
@ fuzzy
I've gone all around the fort, and I haven't seen anything but buttresses and walls. How big should the square I'm looking for be?

Also, Is there a way to find your target? My giantess is hiding out in a damn underground expansive cavern.

I'm curious as to why nobody has directed all these questions to the adventurer forum, but whatever. :3

What exactly do you mean by "buttresses and walls"?
A straight wall going up could mean that the fort starts above where you are, and you need toget to higher ground.
The entance should be somewhere between 10 and 30 tiles to a side.

I meant all I could find were walls. By buttresses I was referring to fortifications that stuck out of the walls, or rather extending a segment of wall further out than it's surroundings.
Another 3 rounds around the fortress and I finally found the entrance, it was in a very small nook one level below me, virtually the size of the door. Thank you for your help, I would not have been as persistent without knowing that there was an entrance.

Anything on that giantess in the underground cavern? I think I'll skip this quest, because that thing is a deathtrap.

If you are underground, you do not need to go above ground to fast [T]ravel, you just need to be in the area of the exit.

ah, ok. So long as I don't leave the area in the x/y planes, I can go plenty deep z-wise? I thought you couldn't get out of a cavern once you entered, thanks for the tip.

I'm just wondering, when using a modded race, what are the most common causes of the world generation throwing up "The world generator is having trouble placing a controllable civilization" errors? It's happening to me, but I'm not sure why it is.

I'm guessing that the problem is all the race's potential starting territory is taken up by other races or does not exist.
For example, dwarves will not survive in a world with no mountains, of exclusively evil mountains.

I do not know if this is the actual problem, and if it is not, sorry.

Hmm, I couldn't leave the cavern due to the 'can't travel until you leave this site' message. Found my way out though. I figured I should report that to ya zerg. Perhaps because there was one more giant in the complex that had a bounty out for it?

I have a meeting hall with tables and chairs. I want to make it at a dining room too. Do i have to select just one table and press 'dining room' and resize it to cover the whole room, or select every table and cover just the table and the chair near it or select every table and cover the whole room?

First thing you want to do is remove the "meeting hall" zone. Dining rooms act as meeting halls themseves, and it is easier to turn it off if you need to that way. Second, a room includes all furntiure within it's boundary. Rooms that overlap are considered "shared" and have their value halved. Thus you should do ONE table.
