Do boots, greaves/leggings, gloves etc. come in pairs or do I need to manufacture 2 for each dwarf?
They come in pairs, I believe.

Is there any way to 'search' among all the exposed stones? I just discovered the manager, asked for 20 cokes, but I've run out of bituminous coal and I would rather not have to look all round the map myself to find where I got it from...
I don't think so, but DFprospector in Dwarf Hack can tell you if you actually have more than 20 bituminous coal :P
If you look at the wiki it'll say the layer the stone is usually found in. If you see other stone/soil/sand from the same layer you're in the right place. Just make big mining shafts on unused levels in it's layer and search for it. Or you could use trees. Or go for magma.

Do boots, greaves/leggings, gloves etc. come in pairs or do I need to manufacture 2 for each dwarf?

'Greaves' and 'leggings' are a singular item, like trousers or jeans.

Yea, but for gauntlets it says gauntlet and boots it says boot. It's kinda confusing.

They're made in pairs.

'Urist cancels fell tree: taken by strange mood'
'Uris is taken by a fey mood'

A season of sitting in a dining room later...

'Urist cancels strange mood: went insane'
'Urist has gone berserk!'

What happened? Usually they make an artifact and become legendary, this one parked himself in the dining hall/meeting hall and stayed there for a whole season before he decided to make some fun.

While I'm at it, how do I deal with berserks? My militia is set up but not equipped or trained yet, and I have no traps :(

That and he's surrounded by baby cows, those poor poor cows.

You didn't have the workshop he needed, whatever that may have been.  It will depend on his profession.  If his only skill was in woodcutting, he would have needed a craftsdwarf's workshop.

For moods in general: If the dwarf hangs around and doesn't claim a workshop - you don't have the appropriate workshop yet. Look for the skills and build whatever is needed.
If the dwarf hangs around at the workshop an doesn't fetch things and hasn't started his project - query the workshop with q an watch out what the dwarf is muttering, screaming or sketching - there is a table at the magmawiki for his needful things.

If they are haulers or their skill has no workshop/can't produce artifacts it's generally a craftdwarves workshop. I often find they bonecarve aswell.

Any good ways to get through an aquifer to mine further down? I'm using a pump stack to try and drain it, but I can't tell if I'm making very little progress, or simply none at all.

If it's an aquifer (water source is the edge of the map) then the water is infinite. Dig around it.

This is a feature, not a bug, correct?
You're playing Dwarf Fortress.  There isn't much of a distinction.

So now that archery is (supposedly?) fixed, do you still have to assign each target individually or can you assign them as entire rooms now?
