How do I a) remove a downward stairway to make room for an up/down stairway and b) place an upwards stairway on a tile that's been mined out already?
Assuming you didn't construct the stairway, you don't need to remove it, just press b>C and build an up/down stairway, consequentially, this answers both questions.

The staircase is built, and the tile is mined. I'm trying to renovate the place a little.

"Extremely low"... Ground level is 144, though. Which means that's 17 levels below ground level. >_> And what, exactly, is it that you mean "3x3 embark tile"? You mean that no matter where I embark I'll get HFS, correct?
Which version are you playing? I thought you meant 127 levels below ground level.

Can I build glass bins/barrels?
No.

How do I delete early save games? I get lots of files and a big file size by year 5 and it only gets bigger. It's also hard to find which one is the latest.
<DF folder>\data\save has all your save files. Delete the ones you no longer need.

I tried "remove construction", but it didn't work on the downward stairs.

Of course not >_>" That's 37. I'm still only allowed 90 levels above that for some insane reason. Also, I... don't know, I just downloaded it from

This conversation is about 3x as bad as any in the mermaid thread. We are discussing which race of children works best as a weapon.

I can't find any full picture of the weight of materials. Is aluminium lighter than bloodthorn timber for instance ? Is using lead for bins and barrels very detrimental to your fort ?

Are you removing them from the right z-level? Are you sure they're constructed? You can try channeling down or building something else over them.

Some dwarf went crazy early and wanted to build something with "rock blocks." Knowing of that bug, I quickly built him a magma forge and a magma smelter, smelting one galena ore for a bar of lead. Luckily this was fast enough before he went totally insane, but he created some named lead battleaxe. Is that crap?

...Rock blocks is a perfectly normal request. Rock bars is metal bars. Your axe is basically crap, but it's valuable. Install it in a weapon trap in your dining room.

Yeah it was rock bars then. How do I make a tree farm? I want some wood.

If I run out of wood, what is the recommended material for barrels and bins?

<insert cheap/common metal here>

Nickel (found as garnierite in gabbro), lead (found as galena almost everywhere), and zinc (found as sphalerite in metamorphic layers) are all good bets.

All three iron ores (hematite, limonite, magnetite) are found in sedimentary rock, and hematite is also found in igneous extrusive layers.

How do traps work? I built 2 rows of cage traps at my gate using mechanisms and some dwarves carried the glass terraniums (I think) on top of it to make the green symbols lighter. Are they armed? After a creature is caught, how do I move it somewhere?
