So I seem to have a little immigration problem.. During first or second year I got two small waves (less than 5 dwarves each) and for past 5 years I've got nothing. I checked from view civ's there's lots of stuff (dwarves, humans, elves, kobolds) nearby but only humans and those cannibalistic elves seem to come trade. Haven't seen a single message from dwarves.. I like having constant 200+ fps but 24 dwarves is not enough (there's a babymaker in my fortress.. she has 5 kids <.<). Am I doomed?

Well... I got no solution to your problem but I always have a max of 25 dwarves in my fortress. If you can just "make" more then it shouldn't be such a problem.

Well my babymaker doctor is doing her part and she had a baby while I was typing my question.. also browsed the forum some more again and someone seemed to have similar problem.. no mountainhome or something, guess I'm doomed. Too bad, after like a two hour search I found a place with a nice river and magma only 15 levels deep.

Abandon & reclaim from a civ that's still a going concern? (when you're selecting the embark region, Tab 2-3 times to get a list of Dwarf Civs, pick one that highlights an area of the world map when selected).

or do the "Export Local Image" thing to get the world gen params, re-gen the world, & start fresh from a still living civ? (also, you can usually roll the start date back a bit without noticeably affecting geography, meaning your preferred civ might still be around in the new attempt).

Tab 2-3 times to get a list of Dwarf Civs

Like six hours after I had started my fortress I found out about that.. curses. Thanks for reminding me. I always thought those were simply nearby civilisations..

Edit: So I googled if your game says while checking dwarven civ info "This land has no important leaders" that your race was wiped out and migrants after hard coded ones and babies are a no go?

well no important leaders can mean a few things,
1.Your civ was wiped from the face of the earth
2.The preveious king was killed JUST as world gen ended (thus you may still get migrants)
or
3.The leaders are very boring and no one listens to them, thus they are not important.

Do farmers need any hauling enabled to do their job properly?  I have them set only for "Food Hauling" and "Cleaning" but it seems like no one is working on the farm.

Be sure you have set what to farm on the fields, for all seasons. And that you have seeds ofc :)

That made me discover something else strange-  I have hundreds of seeds, but apparently none are reachable by the dwarves.  When I go over a new  field, it tells me that there are no seeds available.  How can I find where my seeds are in the fortress?

Its probably the wrong season, check what seeds can be planted during which season from dfwiki.

This pure mountain spring water is indispensable. Literally. I'm out of paper cups.

I have seeds for all the seasons and plenty of them, the problem is that they must be inaccessible somewhere in my fortress

Seeds are found in food stockpiles.

Are the farms underground or above?
If under ground you need to have muddied ground for farms to work. Easiest way to do this (especialy early on in a fort) is to dig out a big area next to a pond and then breach the pond and let it flood.

I normally have an initial 11x11 area dug out with a smaller (5x5) area channeled out next to it to act as a cistern for my early forts. The complex plumbing systems come later.

Other possiblilities, is a pathing issue, can your dwarves path to/from the food stockpile/farms?
Is there a caravan on your map? Items in the caravan will show up on the z-screen stocks. Same goes if you have an animal civ in the caverns below.

Fuckin' barrels, how do they work?

I have several large food stockpiles that are overflowing with food -- particularly bad is my prepared food stockpile. In these stockpiles I have some barrels, but mostly the food just lays on the ground unprotected. I know I have more prepared food because all of my kitchens are *CLT* to the max. The solution is to add more barrels to the stockpile.... but my dwarves won't. I have a hundred empty barrels in my furniture stockpile just laying there uselessly. Why won't they add barrels to the food stockpile? I have dwarves with hauling labors standing around with thumbs up their collective butts and nobody wants to do this...

It's not game ending because I do have more than enough food, it's just annoying and I'd like to figure out why they do it this way.

Do the stockpiles allow barrels?
