My Mayor has mandated the construction of certain goods: Make adamantine items (1/1)
Is he telling me I have to make one, rather than forbidding the making of it? How am I supposed to make one without the raw material? How much time do I have?

Bucket brigade irrigation, do I have this right
Designate a water source, have 2 buckets
This will work on stone right?
Make a 6 by 6 room.
clear all stone.
channel the innermost 2*2 box
slope the 4* 4 box down(so you can enter the new lower 2*2 room
go down to the new 2 * 2 room below designate it as a pond?(or do that with the whole 4* 4 and the water will go down to the lower room.
The dwarves will try to fill the pond with the buckets.
When they get 1/7 level of water on the 2*2 lower rock floor, it will say muddy and I can then designate it as a farm and carry on from there..
I am going to try this as soon as I get home tonight, so I want to be sure and ready to go.

top level
HHHHHH
HVVVVH
HVOOVH
HVOOVH
HVVVVH
HHHHHH

H is ledge
V is slope down
O is channeled open ground

Lower level

VVVV
VFFV
VFFV
VVVV

V is slope up
F is farm

Do I have it?

What you have will work, if you designate the pond at the upper level. Be sure and include a place in the designation for the dwarves to stand when they are dumping in the water.

He wants one.
Don't worry too much about it though, he won't go berserk over one skipped mandate.

He will, however get more and more upset the more times it is ignored. Either eliminate his mandating ability (once you have the ability to name a Baron, name someone else) or make sure to keep some adamantine in reserve once you find it.

I have a Windmill on the surface that says "Active / Total Power: 20 / Power Needed: 5" and directly below it's center I have a Gear Assembly with the same status. On the level below the Gear Assembly I have a Millstone that says "needs to be powered"... what am I doing wrong?

Did you channel out the square above the millstone?

so i have some goblins in some cages. If let them out of their cages in the caverns below my fortress and lock them in there, will i still get combat reports about the things they're doing/running into/being attacked by as they wander around?

I think you will, but only until they leave your sight. The will be gone from the map pretty fast anyway, hurrying to the open edges of the cavern.

How does knapping work?
Goblin runs up, shoves child in a bag, and (due to the lack of vans) runs like hell.

He means knapping, the adventurer skill for making weapons from stones, not Kidnapping.

Anybody have issues with soldiers not eating or drinking anything while on duty. I notice they all get thirsty and hungry, but never eat anything out of their backpack even if they have something.

That mandate question reminded me of something, my current mayor has decided to mandate some copper items to be made. Oh wait, did I say copper? I meant native copper. Is that possible? Follow up, if so, since native ores have the same value as the metal they get smelted into, should I just make native "stone" things rather than metal ones when possible?

Second, I have a long and twisting one-space wide path to the first cavern, may this be the trouble I'm having getting workers down into it?

In 31.12, do dwarves with assigned bedrooms still just pick the nearest bed to sleep in regardless of who owns it?
yeah...
