It shouldn't be.  This is a new fort and I havent seen if my refuse pile is filling up but I have yet to touch any refuse options. Ill check when I get home.

Press o(Or the orders menu hotkey)
Go to "refuse"
Press o again
They should now unignore the refuse outside.

They're refuse, and sadly, you can't specify to keep shells. I just make an indoor refuse pile behind an airlock set of doors near my craftsdwarf shops.

In addition to my unanswered question about children... how do you trap animals in the wild? Not talking about mean things like cougars or unicorns, stuff like deer and foxes. Build random cage traps?

Build cage traps.  Build walls to funnel animals through the cage traps.  Since most animals will flee from dwarves, you can move a military squad around to herd wild animals into your cage traps as well.

Ah, that makes sense.

So anyway... is there any way I can encourage dwarves to have children? Like I've said a few times, no immigrants due to civ's collapse.

Set up a fortress that takes fairly little labor to maintain.  No military, no trade, wall off the outside, and have your only major ongoing labors be food and booze production.  Make a statue garden.  With lots of idle time, your dwarves will throw lots of parties, become friends, and eventually get married and have kids.  This will take a long time, although once you get a few really fertile couples they'll churn out kids at a pretty good rate.  It takes 12 years for a dwarven child to be able to do anything useful, so you've got a long wait.

Make kids mature in a year. Amaze people with your fast-growing children. Slaughter the goblins with 2-year-old warriors!

How do I make Large Gems? My mayor wants some, and I don't want to kill him cause he's my legendary mechanic.

You have a random chance to get a large gem each time you cut a gem.

The higher the skill, the more likely. If you have a glass industry, you're saved!

It's not boring for your dwarves. They get to party 24-7 ofr years on end.

Lucky bastards.
