any tips for embarking a full size area everytime i try the game just crashes

The game literally can't handle it. I mean literally literally. It cannot allocate enough memory to load an entire square.

the largest my computer can handle is 7x7. By that time fps is so low it's no fun. Any bigger and the game either crashes on embark or has random crashes while playing.

Hey guys, is there any way to remove ramps from above?
Well, I should be more specific: I want to make a traditional, RL-style graveyard, where the coffin will just be 'built' inside a hole. I channeled out the holes, but the resulting ramp means I am unable to construct the coffin, and designating the ramps for removal doesn't seem to work.

Fakedit: Wait, would it work if I constructed a ramp aboveground first, so my miners could remove the natural ramp below? ??? Hrm, lemme go check if I just answered my own question...

Realedit: Crap, no, that didn't work. I have the stairs built, but no one seems to be doing the 'remove ramps' job. Ideas?

I think DFHack has a utility for removing ramps, don't think you can do it in a 1x1 pit without hax.

Hrm... I looked at that, and it says all ramps removed and replaced by floors. I don't want all the ramps in the map removed, am I misunderstanding it?
Regardless, I'm saving first. :P

I'm not sure if it's all, I think it's all the ones you have designated for removal, but I've not used it in several DF versions, and that was only once.

So yes, back up your save :P

Bah. Well, the de-ramping option worked, and yes it is just ramps designated for removal, so thanks for that!
Sadly, my dwarves failed to build in the resulting hole, claiming they have no access to the location. At this point I'm thinking I'll just dump the dang corpses in the hole, remove their ghosts with Runesmith and be done with it.
Or, I guess I could dump 'em, build a floor and then place a slab there? Hey, that works. :)

That's actually a nifty idea. It's like a tombstone.

Actually, yeah, I really like that idea. Dump the body in the hole, floor over it and build a slab on the tile above it, boom, instant grave.

I want to play without immigration, only seven Dwarfs survival in the wilderness. In the Wiki it says on getting no immigrants:

"A possible workaround is to edit the raw files so the the created wealth of your fortress is negative, which should scare away new migrants."

I've never fondled around with the raws, so can anybody help me and say where exactly I found this line and what I have to edit?

Edit: Of course I know about the population cap, but as we all know it doesn't work until you reach 30 or so.

I'm not sure where to find those particular raw files, but to my knowledge you'd still get the first two migrant waves, as they are hard-coded and will appear even if the dwarven civ is dead.

I've wanted to do things like this too, and the only way I can see of easily doing it, is setting your pop cap to 0 in the .ini file and killing off the two hard-coded waves.  :-\

Thanks for the answer, btw how can I keep merchants away?

Don't build a depot? Merchants might show up, but they can't trade without one.

Oh hey, I actually got it to work. This is going to be a hell of a time-consuming process, somehow I doubt I'll stick with it. :P
But yeah, once it's done it should look quite nice! Watching my dwarves march up and toss a corpse into a tiny grave is a disturbingly satisfying experience. :-\ Oh DF, what have you done to me?!

What changes to the raws must I make to allow weapons made of Gold?
