Make a zone through the [i] menu and assign it as a pasture.

For some reason, on my jobs list, the hi-lighted job is hi-lighted in black which makes my current selection unreadable. How do I go about changing what color the hi-lighted option is using?

I consulted the wiki and google but could not find my answer.

Only way I know is to to copy the save files, then reinstall DF, but if you use mods or tilesets, etc, that might take a while.

(Don't attempt to answer that.  Down that path lies ... well I was going to say madness but you all run towards madness as if it was made from chocolate and puppies.  Just forget I said anything.)

This particular embark site is giving me about 30 fps. Besides a river flowing down one z-level there is also a bunch of carp. Is it the carp causing these problems? How do I fix this?

I'm trying to (mostly) naturally bring about the Age of Death/Emptiness, and it looks impossible if a dwarven civilization is spawned. Every last dwarf can be dead for a thousand years and it still claims it's the Age of the Dwarf.

Is there any way to get the age change to trigger? I'd really like to start a fort in the Age of Emptiness and that looks impossible at the moment.

civilization of dwarfs only spawn with more than 300 of height (hills/mountains).
so generate with advanced parameter a world with less height than that and it "should" work.
Though you should note that since your own dorfs are, well, "dorfs" you "are" the age of the dwarf.

“Do something!” she whispered, trying to keep her sight on all of them at once.
Basileus clapped his hands once. The Forgotten took a step forward, attracted by the sound.
“There, I did something. I clapped. I like clapping,” he said. -The Investigator And The Case Of The Missing Brain.

alright... one of my militairy was injured on one foot, and is now not crawling to get healed, nor is anyone helping him... why?

never mind, as I should have guessed, helping out another dwarf is very low priority

2 little questions.

1. If I mine flat a mountain and use the local river to irrigate the top of the massive Obsidian Rock layer(s) I found will grasses and trees start to grow there?

2. If you have soil in your fortress, and you dig outside your fortress to the caverns. Will trees and mosses start to grow in the soil of the fortress, eventho there is no direct underground connection to the caverns?

1. I don't think aboveground plants will grow in a mountain biome.

2. Yes.

A dwarf with a Station order will stand on a random spot within 3 tiles of the location you specify.  So make a 4x4 danger room with no other tiles within a 3-tile radius of one of the corners, and then set the Station order to that corner.  You could even do it with a 4x1 room, if you're short on resources -- you just need to make sure there's plenty of natural stone/soil around the dead end.

Err... it turns out I hadn't hit Reload, and I was responding to a post from 5 pages back.

Are the middle left and right tiles of a magma forge the unpassable ones? Any advice on setting them up?
