Food can just be stored in barrels though, right?

Yes, but only in stacks of up to 10, which means large stacks of prepared food often can't be stored in barrels.

I have a possessed dwarf asking for two things: "stone... rock" and "cloth... thread".

I have 20+ of Silk Cloth, Wool Cloth and Fiber Cloth and I have 10+ of Silk Thread, Hair Thread and Fiber Thread. I also have tons and tons of cloth.

I have no burrows active, pathway to cloth, thread and rock stockpiles are open and clear and I disabled my hospital just in case he wanted the cloth out of it. None of those items are under the Forbid, Hidden of Dump tag.

And he's still asking for items, why?

Edit: Oh ya, his favorite stone is Granite and I got plenty of it in both rock and block form.

Has he gathered any other items?
If so, he may be wanting more of that item first.

Ya he went to get some cloth already, not sure if he picked up stone or not though.

Can you [t] over the workshop and see what kind of cloth it was?
You may be out of that particular cloth, and he wants more.

He has 3 pages of Sheep/Alpaca/Llama and Pig Tail Fiber. I don't have any more of the animals or animal cloth on hand, does this mean that my poor miner is about to have Crossbow Bolts for breakfast?

Well it pulls from a cave lake, so that's not much of an option...
but my issue lies in the fact that water sits in the bucket, presumably when dwarves go to give my wounded drinks but get distracted, and it THEN becomes stagnant.

So your dwarves drink from the well without a problem, but if they put down the bucket, the bucket stagnates?

You might want to designate one of your less skilled dwarves as a simple food and water carrier then, so they don't get distracted by other jobs.

Food / water / architect might do OK and give them something else useful to do as well.

Check to make sure none of that stuff is forbidden or dumped.

Set up some shearing / spinning / plant processing and loom thread to cloth production.

** Edit Add **

I don't believe that any artifact jobs use thread.  If need be, you can set up loom jobs, then get rid of your hospital zone to let your dwarves have access to whatever thread might be stored there...

After the artifact is started, re-establish the hospital zone and make some thread asap.

Got one of my own here - started a new fortress and I've accidentally set up my dwarves in a situation where the hospital is closer then the dormitory.

Rather than move everything around I decided to just set traffic zones.

My traffic zones are set as 1/4/16/64 for high, normal, low, restricted access levels

My dwarves are completely ignoring traffic zones when pathing to beds.

Is this normal?  Is zone restrictions only for dwarves pathing for certain things, or should it affect all pathing?  I rarely use pathing restrictions and I've never noticed them being ignored before when I did use them.

Path to the hospital beds from the front door of the hospital is at minimum 640 steps (10 restricted steps) and from the same tile, dormitory beds are about 50 steps (10 normal steps, 10 high use steps)

You can bring buckets in to trade depot, to get rid some of the extra content. More info can be  googled.

The problem is that I can't haul the bucket anywhere, it's the bucket in the well building itself; as opposed to one they use to haul water around. Which come to think of it negates my theory of distracted dwarves.

Perhaps it has something to do with dwarves trying to clean themselves, but what I don't get is that there are 10 units of stagnant water in the bucket, as if the dwarves just bring the water up to stagnate it on purpose...

And why is this stagnant water a problem? Dwarves given such water won't get unhappy thoughts, on the opposite, they will be pleased. Maybe only dwarves who drink it on their own wouldn't be happy, but they should choose booze over water anyway.

Well to be totally honest the well isn't used for drinking water, as I have a booze stockpile to last me a lifetime. Issue I have is that I don't know if the stagnant water can be used to clean my dwarves...

Well, I use an external  utility to destroy stagnant water in dropped buckets (as well as claimed clothing) because it messes with making lye, but I have some buckets with it, including the one in my well. Dwarves go and clean themselves just fine. Also they use any murky pools in vicinity to do so, if there's too much crowding by the well.
