If
Under the "civilizations" screen, some of the civilizations have a P next to them.  What's that mean?  Didn't find it in the wiki.
It means that you are in a "P"eace state with them, it never goes away for me even if they attack me (bug?)
Probably not.

They may be at war with your fortress, but they aren't at war with your civilization as a whole.

You need to change kicking to a main attack in the RAWs for his species. That is to say, change this
   [ATTACK:KICK:BODYPART:BY_TYPE:STANCE]
      [ATTACK_SKILL:STANCE_STRIKE]
      [ATTACK_VERB:kick:kicks]
      [ATTACK_CONTACT_PERC:100]
      [ATTACK_FLAG_WITH]
      [ATTACK_PRIORITY:SECOND]
to this
   [ATTACK:KICK:BODYPART:BY_TYPE:STANCE]
      [ATTACK_SKILL:STANCE_STRIKE]
      [ATTACK_VERB:kick:kicks]
      [ATTACK_CONTACT_PERC:100]
      [ATTACK_FLAG_WITH]
      [ATTACK_PRIORITY:MAIN]

If you make a megabeast adventurer, and retire in a city, and embark on that city...

...never mind, I'll find out.

How do i tame creatures? Whenever i go to tame my caged animals, they don't appear on the "tame large animal" screen, and if i release them then they cause havoc and flee/die, without ever appearing on the tame animals screen.

I don't need a dungeon master either,- i changed their raws from [PET_EXOTIC] to [PET].

I have a minor problem,
My large pumpstack is pumping water into a 5(or 6) level bassin(for some water pressure test) but the bassin is not filling, only the lowest level has 7/7 water and the second level is completely dry.
were the hell is my water going ?

Changing the Animals RAWS should do it. Thats what Ive been doing.   Maybe you forgot to change the Raws that are INSIDE your save game. There will be a copy of the raws in any save game you have and those will be the files that are used.

How random are migrants? I'm new to DF, and I've been following TinyPirate's walkthrough more or less accurately. But after a year, I still only had my original group. So, restarting and playing through another year, I still have had no migrants. I'm going to continue with this fort, but I've pretty much reached the limit of what I can do with this group.

(Tiny Pirate, by this point, seems to have doubled his numbers!)

Thanks.

You wouldn't happen to be pumping into an aquifer layer or natural body of water, would you? It sounds like it's a sink -- a feature which absorbs water poured into it.

But after a year, I still only had my original group.

Your civilization is probably dead; you should almost always get immigrants in the first year unless your population cap is set below 7 or your race of dwarves died out during worldgen.

It does indeed look like a sink. But its totally build from artificial stone so that not possible, its really wierd.

Is your pump stack as high as the top level of the cistern?

That is,

, not

Or you are unreachable by them for some reason?  Did you get the dwarf traders?  Are dwarfs a civilization on your civ screen ('c' key)?
