The best change from the old version?
« on: April 02, 2010, 05:50:31 am »

What do you think is the best change from the old version?

For me, to my surprise, it is something quite simple - not having the game paused when every goddamn useless stone under the sun is found, or even for useful ones. Every time I see 'you have found hematite!' at the bottom of the screen my body still tenses up with dread and expects to have to unpause the game... go back up 20 Z levels... go to where I was looking before... and probably be moved away by another notification in 5 minutes. Something as simple as stopping these updates has made game play, for me at least, infinitely smoother and much more satisfying. I'd ask Toady to consider doing more of the relatively simple changes like this just to neaten the game up a little (or probably a lot).

I've got to agree, even though the other features are much more awesome. The old announcement system just wasn't playable once I reached the stage where I wanted to grid mine a few levels.

The very best part of the new version is that hatch covers no longer blink on and off when placed on ramps and stairs.  Honestly, everything else pales in comparison to this addition.

With regard to announcements, being able to center on the locations of announcements (like where Urist was when some groundhog distracted him), is fantastic.

I had a dwarf name Urist once, I had Iton spar him to death and laughed!

I think we're all missing the fact that Tower Caps are now white. This is great.

Toss up between the underground and the new military... well one wouldn't be anywhere near as much fun without the other.

I started on an evil mountain range and the underground is full of zombified critters, I recently had a zombie gremlin, and I sent in three dwarves unarmed to kill him, they spent ages trying to wrestle him to death but you can't kill a zombie by breaking it's arms and legs, they all became legendary wrestlers and fighters before I conscripted my woodcutter and gave him an axe to finish him off. Still, legendary wrestlers are always good to have, now I just have to train them to use weapons so they can actually kill some zombies.

I started a small fort to check for bugs and see what nifty things lie underground. After setting up a little village, project "deep core mine" was a go and a dwarf started to make his descent into hell.
*dig, dig, dig*...
Underground cavern with mushroom forest. Cool.
*dig, dig, dig*...
GIANT underground cavern with enough water to terraform Arrakis. Cool!
*dig, dig, dig*...
ENORMOUS underground cavern with ruins populated by skeletal snakemen. Wait, what?

I'm currently trying to bypass it in a meaningful way, channelling water from the above cavern onto their heads in the meantime. It won't hurt them, but at least it'll stop the miasma. I haven't seen the oceans of magma yet.

However, the best changes for me thus far are the job priorities that make the dwarves continue what they're doing if they're slightly parched, and the aforementioned announcements. With how many different rock strata we can dig through now (I got four simultaneous announcements for new rock types once), this is simply priceless.

I'm very fond of the new underground features, even if they did render the fort I've been designing for months to cope with this release useless.

I like the fact that anvils are now much cheaper, and that you can buy glass, sand, cow eyes (tasty!!!), and barrels of blood (I dunno ... maybe I can cook it?).

The figurines depicting history events were a nice touch too.

I can't decide
New types of mushrooms of various striking colours
Massive underground caverns, obviously
The new uniform system (I just got the hang of the military screen, which actually seems to be pretty awesome)
Magma industry being totally possible everywhere

Loved the health care system. I'm hurting my dwarves just to fix them.
