Is the new combat system largely cosmetic?

So this new combat system is pretty cool. I'm slashing people's muscles apart and bruising their fat, which is pretty rad.

But it sort of begs the question, how does this system change the combat dynamic? Does anyone know what slashing tendons and stuff actually does that wasn't achieved before with the old brown yellow red system?

Hair, skin, fat, etc actually offer protection now. You'd have a hard time killing a really fat enemy with a dagger as you wouldn't get through the layer of fat. With a hammer, however, you would be able to bruise the fat and shatter the bones even through the fat.

Just an example, of course.

Yes, the new combat system is very different. No more falcon punches (I have to beat the humans untill they are knocked out or lose heart or lung function and often I still have to strangle them for dozens of turns to actually kill them)

And I can't kill people by throwing teeth at them :(

Depends on the teeth. Dragon teeth do a nice job.

Depends on the teeth. Dragon teeth do a nice job.

Anyone else notice how... weak dragons are in this version?  I took a brand new dwarf adventurer with skills mostly in swimming and ambushing, but one rank of hammerdwarf for a weapon and went looking for a cave (I want him to get to the underground!).  First cave I found had a dragon.  OSHI-!
So I run up to him, crosscut dodge the dragon breath (whew), smack him once and..... shatter his skull.  Dead dragon.  WTF!?

And getting surrounded by wolves is no longer a guarantee of getting your throat ripped out and seeing a "the wolf spits out your head" message. (How is a wolf supposed to get your whole head in its mouth anyways?)

Hah, I sent my starting 7 at a Giant Toad.  One by one it ripped off their heads with a latch + shake.  Poor dwarves.  NEXT!

The combat system is quite amazing, I've played an adventurer with a whip and lashed someone in the upper body, I got the message "...hitting the false rib, which pierces the heart!" (Couldn't remember the start of that message, but the fact ribs can now pierce your heart if there's a big enough hit to you is quite awesome)

Incidentally, carp are still just as deadly from what I can tell because the combat AI appears unchanged.

I think it basically all comes down to organ damage, bleeding and/or severing.

Nothing really changed with slashers and piercers. Slashers still give you the severing and some punctures, piercers give you the organ damage.

Bashers, as was said, now bruise down through skin/fat/muscle and then shatter bones...at which point I think the bones can damage organs. Slightly different than how it used to be. With clothing, plus armor, plus all the body materials, there are many layers weapons have to get through now. Without armor, it doesn't seem like...but as was said, trying to beat people to death is a lot harder now.

I think the BCs are confusing a lot of people because they aren't normal. People fight them in the arena, and after 30 or so "xxxx was shattered/fractured" people think it's not actually doing anything. It WOULD be doing something...to anything else but a BC.

I can confirm broken bones dealing organ damage. Smashed this poor fellow's chest in with a maul, broke a few ribs, one of which punctured his lung.

Basically how I see it.

Piercing-->Great vs unarmored as it will likely pierce an organ, horrible vs armored as it cant get past the armor

slashing -> Decent vs armored or unarmored

Bashing -> less effective then slashing or piercing vs unarmored, but will ignore armor in a lot of cases *Shattering the bone through the iron greaves*

I have noticed that all kinds of attacks have become much more weak. for example, I hit a human's head with a two-handed bronze sword and it didn't do much. And I have not had any dismemberments at all. (Well I did punch someone's teeth out)

crossbows are still very deadly, but not as deadly as they were before. I think they are pretty realistic atm. you get shot once or twice, you won't die from the shots but the huge bleeding they cause afterwards. especially if one gets stuck and you have to pull it out.
