I created a new world (now!), looked around, and found what appeared to be the easiest place to start.

I really need to read better before embarking.
One tile to the left, and I'd have a forest, but that was on the very left-side of the starting grid, so now I have less than ten trees, and a carpload of cliff.

Woo.

I released the clowns, and began to drown hell. I am planing the have the dwarves that survived actually settle here (no trees, no sand, and of course a direct link to hell (well it has water gushing through it but the demons are already in the magma lake somehow)).

Dug down until I hit my first cavern.  Set up base there, sealed a chunk off.  Dug another shaft, somehow missed the second cavern and magma sea altogether, hit semi-molten rock, shrugged.  Later noticed shaft's walls were warm, encountered magma sea, spotted adamantine pillar.  Started digging into it, before being annihilated by a Forgotten Beast; a fire-breathing pterosaur that flew over the walls I'd set up.

Anyone knowingly sending anyone else on cracked.com, encyclopediadramatica or tvtrope should have his eyes gouged, his keybord stuck up his arse and get banned from the internet for at least 24 hours.

The depth of the hell level apparently depends on the location. I think its a bug if its 50 z-levels deep, unless you specifically told it to generate 50 z-levels on the bottom through the custom world generation. With it set to 1 (the minimum) you can get hell levels that are only 2 z-levels deep, but you have to be on a flat plains area. I think the depth of the hell level depends on the varying elevations of the surrounding area - flat plains will have small hell levels, gigantic cliff areas will have huge hell levels. Having a big one can really cut down your FPS too.

well, wow.

I just used kill orders for the first time (i havnt even set up any sort of military so far, just picked 2 fresh useless immigrants and put em in a squad).
Order: kill a groundhog.
They chase it around a bit, catching up slowly to lose it again, yellowing it all over. Then the thing dodges into a pond.
An order is an order, it seems, so my mighty champions jump into the pond and drown.

I havn't laughed so hard in quiet some time.
